This one isn’t so much a drawble as a proper project. :D Obviously nowhere near done, but I’m really happy with how it’s looking so far. I’ve rounded a corner recently when it comes to perspective, partly by taking a bunch of selfies in weird poses, so I can copy the perspective on that. XD
Ahem. Anyway, this is me taking a break from the webcomic, and instead continuing with a “just for fun” project. I’ve been drawing various creatures from the bestiary of Garth Nix’s The Old Kingdom series (aka the Abhorsen Chronicles, if I got that right). This weird creature here is a Free Magic creature known as a Stilken, which shows up in Lirael. It’s described as having the body of a comely woman, and forearms as long as its legs, with hook claws similar to a mantis. It also sports a double row of teeth, a weird stripey tongue, and glowing silver eyes, which are par for the course with Garth Nix’s monsters, sort of.
I was uncertain whether to give it proper woman bits, which is why I’m opting for strategic placement of hair and shadow. ^_^; I did actively decide against a navel, though.
I’ve done some smaller pictures of Garth Nix’s monsters, which I imagine will get posted at some point. There are also probably more to come, as they are unbelievably fun to draw. I’m getting a real kick out of the way Garth Nix gouges the Uncanny Valley as deep as it will go, and then goes spelunking. Okay, this isn’t technically Uncanny Valley, but it is reminiscent of it.
