There was a pen next to his keyboard. Stiles picked it up and pushed the end down. Click. Click. Click.
"You saw Allison with Jackson, right? When we were - at the party?"
Scott's hands clenched against the edge of Stiles' bed, and Stiles hoped he didn't pierce the mattress again; it had been a hassle to repair. Stiles wasn't particularly fond of needles. "Yeah," Scott said. "What about it?"
Click. "Do you think there's any truth to it?" He looked up just in time to catch Scott's eyes flashing yellow.Â
"What do you mean?" Scott looked down, feet going up and down rapidly like he knew what was coming.
Click. "Do you think it could be true? That it showed us things that we've noticed, just... in a different context?"
"Of course not."
Stiles didn't have to be a werewolf to tell he was lying, or not far from it. He clicked the pen, nib disappearing.
Scott sighed. "Stiles," he said. "What did you see?"
Stiles put the pen down. It rolled off the desk and fell to the floor. "My dad," he said, voice breaking. "I saw my dad."
And sometimes, he knew exactly why Scott was his best friend, and why no one could ever replace him:
"You know it's not your fault, right?" Scott said, puppy eyes and everything. Stiles had to fight the urge to tell him he was adorable, but couldn't get it past the aching lump in his throat.
He coughed, trying to dislodge it. "I don't know anymore," Stiles forced out. "I don't know anything."
Scott didn't say anything. There wasn't really anything he could say; Stiles couldn't shut off his brain, and Scott couldn't make it all go away.
Instead, Scott just sat there for a while, listening to Stiles' heart and his shaky breathing with that odd, telling head-tilt of his. It didn't make things better, but it made him feel a little less alone.
