During the events of TSC they have more meetings than usual when Stuart is in town for Neil and Ichirou was around to wave away the mistakes of Tetsuji

They get pissed of at each other easily enough that tension rises and breaks when they are alone

So they start up a tryst that lasts for much longer than either of them anticipated. They start leaving the Mafia facades behind when the door closes behind them and they act like their lives are some semblance of normal

In MY mind Ichirou does everything with the Moriyama's out of family obligation instead of it being something he genuinely wants to do. So if he gets with Stuart for a little while and they ignore all the mafia related shit--what is the harm?

So they grow closer. Ichirou flies over to Stuart occasionally under the guise of business but is really just having a stay-at-home-not-date with his not-boyfriend

Butttt then Ichirou mentions needing to marry someone to keep up appearances. Yes, this isn't the life he wants for himself. But he was trained and made for this, he isn't stupid

Producing heirs and presenting a strong united front in the First Branch is extremely important. Especially if shits like Neil Josten are going to be on his radar

But they are both more upset about this than they originally thought. They knew they couldn't last forever, they weren't even together even!

So Ichirou gets married. But to someone that is completely uninterested in him. She keeps up appearances and is scarily good at her job (She is some sort of famed actress or writer that has mafia blood)

After a couple meetings where Ichirou's wife was there for posterity, she becomes interested in Stuart's right hand woman...

I call it the "stichi fic" but it's mainly a Stuart character study, Ichirou is just Also There (there are plans for a sequel fic with Ichirou's point of view but I don't talk about it as much because I do have to finish this one first).

It's set post-TKM (more specifically it starts on August 2007). The initial bloodbath of Ichirou's coming into power has died down, but Stuart is still on the process of integrating into the syndicate and putting out the occasional fire.

Mainly their entire deal is that Stuart is, at this point, still the only subordinate Ichirou can somewhat trust. Working for Ichirou is the only thing keeping Stuart from being executed, which might have been a situation he would be desperate to get out of, if there was anyone willing to help him. But since he worked with the FBI, and then subsequently spent the next couple months being Ichirou's new attack dog, the entire rest of the syndicate would want nothing to do with him. So Ichirou is sitting back and enjoying making Stuart his errand boy, this man who is fourteen years his senior and was until six months a boss in his own rights. It's a power trip.

One that is kind of designed to emasculate Stuart, except that Stuart doesn't really care. He's already practically living on overtime, and here Ichirou is. Bringing Stuart inside the house to humiliate him is still letting him past the door. Stuart doesn't gain anything from betraying Ichirou, that's true; The jackpot lies in if he gets Ichirou to listen to him instead. He wants Ichirou to need him, and more than that, he does take a particular pleasure from making Ichirou ask him for things. Stuart will not desobey any of Ichirou's wishes, but he won't comply in advance either; he wants to drag Ichirou down to his level, make him expose himself, turn the mirror around and make him acknowledge he is not any better than Stuart.

Stuart doesn't forget that these are the people that killed his sister. But he can't kill Kengo twice. What he can do is get Kengo's son to depend on him, even if it means that he has to give control to Ichirou. There is nothing material in this world that matters to him more than the satisfaction.

Ichirou is the one with all the power, and Stuart is the one with all the experience. I have described this as boy king/evil advisor before and I will do so again. Stuart has lived a whole life before he even begun working under Ichirou, and he did it in a syndicate that does things very differently than the Moriyamas do. The Hatfords don't believe in masks and secrecy beyond plausible deniability. Not only do people know exactly who he truly is, Stuart is about as openly gay as somebody can be in their line of business (which is to say, not at all, but he has never married and sure does keep some awfully handsome bodyguards around). Stuart's life is not free but it is miles beyond Ichirou's wildest dreams. And it doesn't help that he's always needling – does Ichirou truly have to do things exactly the way his father did?

Ichirou is a very lonely character – the only people he was consistently allowed around were Kengo and Nathan, who died within weeks of each other. His one other chance of connection, Ichirou killed. Furthermore, all he's been raised to be and all that everyone knows him as is the extension of Kengo. Stuart, for all his ulterior motives, is the very first person to actually care to ask him "but what do you want?" Which is why Ichirou tolerates Stuart's badly disguised contempt for all things Moriyama. It's alluring, and it's a temptation Ichirou would have to be very stupid to fall for. And yet.

It is ultimately all about the power play. Who can make the other bend first. Ichirou wants Stuart broken and humiliated and his obedient attack dog, he wants to use Stuart until he can discard him. Stuart wants Ichirou to toss away the mask and the sheep's clothing, he wants to burrow himself so deep under Ichirou's skin he will never wash him out. A lose-lose deal if there ever was one.
