Dear step parents
If you are a step parent and considering having a biological child with your current partner. There are some inportant factors you should consider and account for. 1. Your step kids will be able to tel that you could never love them as much as your biological child. 2. Once the new baby is born they will go from having 1 1/2 parents (the 1/2 accounts for you not loving them as much as the biological parent does) to 1/4 of a parent because all of your time and their original parents time will be devoted to the baby. 2. Once the baby is now a child, the kids may almost get their biological parent back but the new child will always be a reminder that their own portion of the home is broken. (Imagine knowing that if you and your siblings were dangling from a cliff there is absolutely no doubt that the biological sibling is the one that will be saved) It's surprising how loftily people disregard the observations of children. I promise you, they will be able to tell. They will realize that they are being cheated out of devoted parents. Some will act out, some will act up but at the end of the day neither of them will ever know the love of a complete family. If you are about to be a step parent and you are bringing children from your previous relationship then things can be a bit easier. Both sets of children get equal access to a biological parent. Both sets of children have equal access to a step parenent and so long as the two of you dont jump straight into having a new kid together your kids have a decent chance of geowing up without feeling like they got screwed the whole time. So I reiterate. When you dont love your step child as much as you love your biological child, they know. They always know. They can tell and it hurts them more deeply than you could ever try to understand. Being faced with a sibling that receives unconditional love while the love for you is awarded based on behavior and circumstance is far more damaging than you could ever predict
