The Campbell home was on the most efficient route to the high school, so Dean had no excuse to refuse when John told him to pick Sam up on the way in the mornings and afternoons.
Every weekday, at about 7:30 A.M. Dean would arrive in that black Impala that John had given to him for his birthday. Sam didn't know much about cars, but he would definitely say that this kind was one of his favourites.
The school wasn't far from his home, only a thirty minute walk, but his mom insisted that it was safer and easier to just tag along with his stepbrother.
The drive was quiet aside from the music Dean always played, usually Led Zeppelin. The stereo pumping as they pulled into the school's parking lot, earning distasteful glances from some of the older teachers.
Dean often claimed that they, "Wouldn't know good music if it slapped them in the face." And Sam always quietly agreed.
He didn't need to know a lot about Dean to be aware that the older boy had a reputation, gossip in halls, rumours, and stories about a crazy party he was allegedly at. And he always had a girl clinging onto his arm.
And today, as he climbs out of the car, he sees that Dean is greeted by one of said girls. Sam was pretty sure her name was Rhonda. She had been the object of Deans affection for a few weeks now, and will no doubt be replaced by another in no time. A real ladies' man, his stepbrother. Though, others would call him a jackass. That seemed more fitting to Sam.
Lunchtimes were always a blast.
"Dude, I still can't believe that Dean Winchester is your brother now." God, is it really gonna be this conversation again? It's been three months, surely his friends would get over it by now.
"Yeah, I can't believe it either." Sam would mumble as a reply before taking a bite of his apple, he was so sick of this topic.
"When are you going to tell us what he's like? We need details! You can't just leave us guessing." But really, what was there to say? He was kind of an ass, drank more often than not, stared when he thought he wasn't looking, and called him 'Sammy' like it was a compliment.
"I barely know him. Our parents are just dating, and he drives me to school, we aren't all buddy-buddy." That earns four groans from his small group of friends, "Thats so fucking boring!!"
It was, but what could Sam do about it? Dean wouldn't have any interest of actually acting like brothers. No way.
The afternoon came quickly.
Sam always waited by the Impala, -'Baby', his stepbrother so affectionately named her,- Dean was always one of the last students to walk out of the school entrance, he liked to linger after the final class, mess around with his friends before they all departed for the day, and usually, Rhonda would follow him out, kiss him grossly, and then begin her walk back to her house.
This time was different, though. There was no Rhonda clinging to the fabric of Dean's jacket, but there was a bright, red slap mark on his cheek. Oh boy.
"Prince charming has done it again, huh?" Sam couldn't help but chuckle, eyeing the mark as the older grumbles and unlocks the car and falls into the familiar position of driver, Sam quickly followed suit, chucking his bag onto the backseat. "What did you do to deserve a slap?"
"I didn't do anything. Chick's are complicated, Sammy." Right. Of course, Dean was never at fault when his flings got mad and dumped his ass.
"Must have been pretty bad to deserve a hit like that one," Sam grinned a little, leaning back comfortably the passenger seat as Dean pulled away from the school.
"It's nothing, didn't hurt." It definitely hurt. It fucking stung, that girl had too much damn power in her hand. "You'll understand once you start dating. Shit happens."
Sam learnt a few things that afternoon, one being; his stepbrother was trash at keeping relationships. Two; girls slap hard when they're upset. And most importantly, three; Dean Winchesters' top five favourite songs.
