@onlinegallery98 had a great IRL exhibition last week @james_fuentes_llc presenting ephemera from 70s-80s downtown arts community. This stuff is available on the websites (see below) which is also a repository of a ton of online historical documentation as well. #marcmiller has been a historian and curator of this kind of printed matter and small multiples for decades as an answer to the collectors impulse when the original art is too expensive. Kinda like collecting graffiti related stickers. I just posted a few things here because I got distracted talking and forgetting to take pics. STEFAN EINS: THE ENIGMA BEHIND 3 MERCER STREET AND FASHION MODA, 1970-80
Eins’ art explores mysteries and is often indistinguishable from demonstrations of magic, religion and science. His creative strategies include appropriation, viewer interaction, and the treatment of art as low priced product. One exhibition at the 3 Mercer Street Store focused on the wonder of flying and featured a toy hovercraft and a toy bird. Eins’ interaction with gallery visitors was an integral part of the show, billed not as an art event but as a “demonstration and sale.”

STEFAN EINS: THE ENIGMA BEHIND 3 MERCER STREET AND FASHION MODA, 1970-80
As the founder of two innovative art spaces, 3 Mercer Street Store (1972-79) and Fashion Moda in the South Bronx (1978-93), Stefan Eins has a secure place in the story of art in the 1970s and 1980s. Much less known, however is Eins’ own art. This online exhibition looks at his early work and shows how it is philosophically linked to the art spaces he was then creating.

STEFAN EINS, “NO WAR,” 2013
SIGNED LIMITED EDITION PRINT
Stefan Eins makes a timeless and universal statement with this transformation of Peter Paul Ruben’s drawing of Leonardo da Vinci’s lost painting "The Battle of Anghiari" (1505). In this limited edition print the call for “No War” is echoed in Arabic, English, German, Chinese, Russian and Spanish.
Eins is probably best known as the founder of the defunct South Bronx art space Fashion Moda (which lives on today as a cultural concept), and as the creator of the space’s distinctive logo utilizing different scripts in different languages. He is an early practitioner of appropriation whose work often incorporates found imagery as a means to make universal statements that cut across cultural barriers. Eins’s distinguished career as a fine artist has included major exhibitions in New York and Austria.
