Steamroller Pipes: Pros, Cons, Where to Buy
Briefly described, a steamroller pipe is a blown pipe, that looks like an elongated pipe made of glass. It’s commonly described as having a very long and hollow tube that has two open ends, thus the analogy of a steamroller used often in construction. Normally, the bowl is attached to one of these ends, giving around 2 to 3 inches of space and is often elevated by a narrow pipe stem.
All you simply have to do is attach the pipe to a bowl and then fill the bowl with whatever you choose to smoke. You then light up the bowl while covering the carburetor which is the tube’s open end that is closest to the bowl. The lighting results in the production of smoke which is inhaled by the user.
Whew! I hope you’re happy – it’s hard to explain all that in text format (for all you mobile users with photos turned off). In either case, the name given to it is derived from the design of the open end tube on both sides. This is often where the anchor for steamroller machine goes. The shape that glass blowers often use, exhibit forms of its basis on the calumet pipes that were initially used in a number of ceremonial gatherings by the Native Americans. Ala, the “peace pipe”, hahaha. Bet you didn’t know that, did you? Well kind of, because it looks so similar, but in fact a lot of pipes we have today are just fancier versions, made of glass, steel or acrylic, that have existed for THOUSANDS of years (possibly millennia) as wooden and ceramic pipes.
The pipes are available in the market today in a large number of sizes; the one unique feature among all of them though is the big bowl on the cylinder that has two open ends. In the market today are a good number of producers of very high quality steamroller pipes and these include American Glass Works, Magic Glass, Roor, G-Spot and Ehle. All of these producers create a solid and well designed steamroller. While the design may seem simplistic, it’s often a misunderstood pipe until you get your first puff from it. And then the OTHER reason of why it got the name “steamroller” comes to mind, as you fall back on the couch and cough. Steamroller pipes often deliver a Mike Tyson-esque punch to your senses.

The steamroller pipes does not feature any water chambers thus no water filtration takes place. So that means it can often be a “harsh” smoke. That’s not to scare you away, as some people love the coughing from smoking. And with a steamroller, one gets to inhale the smoke directly as it is produced, and a large amount all at once too! The best thing about these pipes though is the fact that they are extremely easy to use, and the fact that they are also very small makes them portable, which is another added advantage.
While the larger and more expensive steamroller pipes are 10″ to 20″ long (25cm to 50cm), often the everyday user is going to get a 5″ or 7″ (13cm to 18cm) steamroller. There is no denying that the steamroller pipes are not made to be used by amateurs. This is simply due to the reason that they normally produce very huge and VERY powerful hits. Many times, smoking from these pipes has been compared to taking direct dry hits. Remember that these pipes do not feature any form of water filtration thus the smoke that you inhale is neither cooled nor smoothed; this is definitely something that only the professionals in the field can handle. These professionals actually claim that the appeal of these pipes comes from their ability to produce the harsh and very strong hits!
