Donnelly Got Cheques and Mail by Mistake ---- DECISION RESERVED ---- Oshawa, Sept. 15. - Harold Donnelly, 18, of Whitevale, with his brother, Alex. Donnelly, 26, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Creighton yesterday of forgery and obtaining money by false pretences at the Oshawa branch of the Royal Bank of Canada and local office of Central Canada Loan and Savings Co. While their counsel, Louis S. Hyman, asked for suspended sentence, as both young men had never been in trouble with the police before. Magistrate Creighton reserved decision until next Tuesday and remanded both young men in custody.
According to information given the court by defence counsel, the cheques had been obtained in a letter which was given them by mistake at the Whitevale post-office. The amounts obtained totalled $144.75 and restitution has been made.
Judgement Reserved Magistrate Creighton reserved judgement in the case against William Anderson of Toronto, who has been charged with false pretences in selling a course of aviation instruction to J. M. Houghton of Oshawa. Houghton claimed that he had paid Anderson $400 for a correspondence course in aviation which he claimed was to include fifty hours’ flying. It was alleged Anderson was in no position to provide for the fifty hours in the air.
Charged with driving a car while under the influence of liquor, Harold Card of Toronto pleaded guilty before Magistrate Creighton and was sentenced to seven days in jail and to pay the costs of the court.
Sentence Suspended Charged with theft by conversion of funds, Sidney Poole pleaded guilty and was placed on suspended sentence by Magistrate Creighton. Poole had collected money for Beaton’s Dairy Products Limited which he failed to account for.
