Rashid recently sold his Djâing equipment to buy a top of the line computer after finding a better job. Â Itâs hard to defend partying every night to two over-achieving parents that constantly ride his back. Â When he hears his door open behind him, he hopes itâs one of his brothers.
Rashid says loudly...Does anyone believe in knocking around here?
Sabien: Â Son, I swear...every time I come in here youâre on the computer playing video games.Â
Rashid breathes hard. Frustrated his parents keep disrespecting him. Â Heâs always on the defense: Itâs my job, Dad...youâre gonna make me lose this round. Iâll talk to you later.
Sabien: Â Boy, donât dismiss me like Iâm one of your lazy friends..Iâm talking to you. Â Your Mom and I are trying to teach you guys a hard work ethic, the value of a dollar..and Iâm concerned youâre trying to do things the easy way. Â ..Son, if you donât look at me when Iâm talking to you.......
Rashid looks up at his father and gets some things off his chest.
Iâm letting you know that I know what Iâm doing. Â It is possible to have a dream and make that dream become a success for you. Â Youâve always said to dream big, did you not? Â Did you or didnât you, Dad?
Sabien reluctantly nods in agreement...still listening. Â
.....Well, thats what Iâm doing! Â It starts right here! *points towards his computer* Â Have you ever seen me more dedicated to something?
Sabien: Â ...Maybe to a party, but...not really.
Rashid closes his eyes and take a deep breath to keep from cursing...and continues...Yall donât ask me what Iâm doing. You just assume. Â
Iâm in Quality Assurance right now, but Iâm working my way up. âCause Iâm not just learning gaming, Iâm learning how to program computers, how to code. Â I can become the best gamer out here in Blythe Harbor..thereâs big money in those competitions. Itâs like a competitive sport. Â Or, I can be like the Simblr or Smoogle guys..and you know those companies are huge. Â Itâs whatever I want, not you and Mom...itâs my life. Â I guess you wonât be convinced until Iâm raking in big money, and it shouldnât be that way.
Look, I love you and I appreciate everything you and Mom are doing for me. I get to stay here and not worry about anything. Â But, I also contribute to the bills and groceries each week. And I try my best to help out with my brothers. Iâm not a slacker, so I just wish you guys would stop treating me like one. Â
Sabien: Â Alright, alright..youâve made your point. Â Iâll let you get back to it. You know itâs all out of love, son. Â
Hey..why donât you take that hot scarf off, itâs not freezing in here.
Sabien leans down and kisses the top of Rashidâs head, then rattles it with the palm of his hand.
Rashid laughs and gets playful: Ayee, donât mess with the âdo, man! ...Iâll put my sweater on..why donât you turn up the heat?  Better yet...why donât you just getouttaheaaah!
He feels like heâs finally won the battle.
Sabien walks into the hallway. Â He canât help but be impressed with his oldest son right now. Â Heâs never seen this kind of passion and focus in him. Â Heâs gonna trust Rashid and see what happens.
