Within canon, the Byakugan is used for a multitude of purposes, as it’s believed to be used for telescopic purposes and can achieve a nearly 360 degree visual of the world around the user. The distance varies, for the person and the age. In ‘The Last’, Hinata is believed to be able to see 20 KM in distance (roughly 65,616′ or just over 12 miles). It also lets the user see chakra, the type and concentration, weak points, etc. And due to minor microscopic natures, probably small details in the person’s movements, injuries, so on and so forth.

Now for modern, you say ‘chakra points don’t have much significance’ and I will outright disagree with you. Firstly, you need to remember that Hinata has had interaction with the canon Naruto universe through @flowerfated ‘s Sakura. Not only did the woman give Hinata a kunai, but she used the Byakugan on it to take a further look at it, and I will confirm she could she Sakura’s chakra and chakra points during the process. Understanding of what those were is another question.

But you’re wanting to know how Modernata uses her Byakugan.

The first thing to do was incorporate the biggest difficulty of her first activation of the Byakugan and that is sensory overload. Think about seeing everything down to a nearly microscopic level in a twelve mile range in every direction all at once. Think about all the colors, grooves, words, letter, blood, beating hearts, heat signatures, smoke plumes, sound vibrations; picture your mind taking in all of that information in a single go.

Canon doesn’t do enough to explain how the Hyuga clan can see all of that and take it all in and I find that to be the biggest problem with the Byakugan. Wielders would be so overwhelmed with visual stimuli there is no way that it wouldn’t have negative repercussions early on and for Hinata, it did have problems. She blacked out almost on the spot.

Hinata’s Byakugan in this setting can’t sift and sort through the information she’s receiving. She receives it all, at once, without the ability to shut any of it down or off in the process. If she uses the eyes to see something four miles out, everything in a 360 degree, twelve-mile radius will be taken in all at once and her brain will have to sort through all of that going forward. Down to every last detail, knook and cranny. But since the world here is different than the Naruverse, then yes, she does use it for different purposes.

If you go back… A couple months? In her journal, there was a couple weeks where she was unable to disable the Byakugan, and at first she was panicked. Reading through those entries, you’ll see her terrified of all the things she’s seeing, her disorientation, and the absolutely hopelessness of going out in public. And for those catching on, she hasn’t been sleeping. Two weeks of 24-hour Byakugan-ing. It would go how’d you’d expect.

Hinata uses the eyesight to see down hallways and streets, checking on individuals and who is approaching. She’s constantly being stalked and her paranoia is rampant. She’ll watch for anyone acting odd, while scanning what they have on their person at the time. She’s specifically used the eyes to get names and addresses off of driver’s licenses on numerous occasions.

But one thing I haven’t touched on is her ability to read lips through the Byakugan, able to tell by the slightest details what a person is speaking. And even if the lips don’t give it away, she is able to see the sound vibrations through the air, watching as wind and sound push through to create distinctive patterns around the point of origin. This is one of her most useful tools, as it lets her know what is going on without having to be present for a conversation, even better since it works against things like cell phones and Skype calls, giving into the vibrations and soundwaves.

The other useful point of the eyes in Modernata’s noggin is they can see temperatures adjust and contort. Not necessarily infrared, Hinata can spot switches in temperatures as they adjust in an area, like heat leaving the body of a person, or small telltales like goosebumps or hair standing on end. Additionally, she can see fine details, such as muscle spasms or body changes in a person that allow her the ability to read the person better.

In the past I’ve talked about the Hyuga’s mutated eyes allow for more finesse in visuals, increased peripheral vision and the eyes creating more moisture so they blink less off, but Hinata is the only one with the Byakugan in this reality, and it has had some side effects as well, such as the eagle-eyed people noted she hasn’t been blinking at all for several months now.

But they’re not flawless. @noctress is currently staying with her, and has a set of earrings on her body that make her a black spot to Hinata’s Byakugan. She noted this early on to @psyprick out of concern, namely because it mimics @oneanswer ; That thing that has been stalking her halls. She’s claimed that not only can she not see it, it’s like the Byakugan wants to look away. This notation has made her hesitant at approaching anything of similar nature.

As for the second part of your question; yes. Oh, yes she can denote the change in a person’s physical make up when you’re on various drugs or having illness present. She can see ulcers and lesions in the body, not the thinner or thicker bloods, spot clots or stones, as well as see the growing damage to both the brain and lungs of smokers. She can see any physical alteration in the body as it happens, mostly on a literal scale. For things that become inserted into the blood stream, she can see the thing moving through as it progresses.

For what it looks like, it depends. With marijuana, she can see the smoke traveling through the diaphragm on the way to the lungs, cocaine she can watch travel the sinus path as the body attempts to absorb it, alcohol makes the blood slightly thinner and flow differently, etc. It’d be a case-by-case incident depending on the body and the drug. But she can notice addicts’ various developmental problems (scars, teeth, internal damage) quickly. Very quickly.

The only thing not touched on in energy; this goes back to chakra, which she can see, but I’ll use @symbioteburnout for an example. Andi has a mark and Hellfire that courses through her. If the goth were to channel that energy while the Byakugan was active, she would see how it interacted with her body, traveled through it, and expelled itself as well. This is true for any type of energy (kinesis, electricity, chi, etc). It seems very intentional.

(This is, really, a very intricate question. Adversary is a neat term here, specifically the meaning;

Noun; One’s opponent in a contest, conflict, or dispute.

In fact, there is a point to make that you are implying Hinata has an adversary in the first place is a very specific notation. It implies that someone or something is keeping her from a goal or challenging her ability to compleat a goal. And, as secretive as I may be, I am giving this one to anyone clicking that read more.

Hinata does have multiple degrees and levels of adversaries challenging her from her various wants and needs; goals and desires. And currently, I would say she has three very specifically:

As it stands, these three are on different levels of holding her back, keeping her in check, or watching as she moves and handles situations. If we were going to be specific, then that lists grows for various reasonings;

It might sound goofy to some of you, but you’re just as much a hindrance in a different way to her than the above mentioned. I say all of this because the five mentioned names have had a hand in manipulating her motives and desires, they change the way she acts and behaves so that she can continue what she’s doing without any specific goal.
