In just a few hours it would be Mother’s Day. Before, the holiday had been a favorite for Kezia. She and her mother would spend the day together, indulging. Fitness class early in the morning, shopping, brunch, more shopping, a movie and then home for more pizza and pink wine than strictly necessary and a marathon of their favorite trashy television series about haunted locations, or whatever the flavor of the month was. They made a whole day of it -- the past few years, Leilani had given them the time to themselves, even. 

This year, Kezia was considering sleeping in, spending too many hours in a row at the gym and then going back to bed. Letting the day pass over her like a current. And to start that, she was going to usher it in while at a strip club. She would stay until last call -- that late, she was sure to sleep in far more than usual. Her eyes trailed along the bodies on stage -- the first shift would be coming to end soon, which meant that the place was crowded with the overlap. Without looking away from the dancer on the pole, Kezia ordered another whiskey rocks.
