There Once Was An App Called Starlize
A lot of people ask, “well how exactly did you come up with the concept of Dubsmash?”, and the truth be told it’s actually a kind of recycling of old ideas and learnings from previous escapades. That is to say that it didn’t entirely fall out of the sky and into the hands of our developers. Allow us to give you a little breakdown of what exactly Starlize was for those of you who do not already know. Starlize was a video application that allowed its users to make a personalised music video using a song from within their music library, perhaps already you are beginning to see a little theme. Like Dubsmash, Starlize revolved around the culture of selfie videos and making the user a performer in his or hers own right. Unfortunately as cool as that idea might seem to be Stralize proved to a somewhat over complicated experience for its users, and inevitably because of this the app was not a success. When you think of great applications, at least ones that go on to become viral, they all have one similar commonality and that is simplicity. Take for example applications like, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, Facebook, Spotify, and even Tumblr! They empower their users with the simplicity of achieving whatever it is that that individual app might centre around. Dubsmash empowers its user via exactly this same method, simplicity!
Despite Starlize falling far short of successful, founders Daniel, Roland, and Jonas were not to be too downbeat about this, and with backgrounds in business and tech development they continued to work on creating that special application. It was actually on the birthday of co-founder Roland Grenke when I suppose you could say a little spark was ignited, that spark leading to embers of Dubsmash. Roland was given a soundboard by our other founders Daniel and Jonas, basically allowing him to push buttons on a board that would then produce a sound for comical effect. Attempting to lip-sync to this the preset recordings was when they realised that they may well be onto something new and innovative. So this boys and girls is a brief tale of how our little app came to be what it is today.
