Chapter 3.5
He's here.
The thought doesnât arrive all at once. It seeps in, slow and cold, like water under a door. It gathers at the edges of my awareness first, a pressure I canât name, before it spills inward and fills the space behind my eyes. It settles in my chest, heavy and deliberate, and then spreads, quiet, invasive until there is no part of me it doesnât touch.
Heâs here.
I donât move.
Not because I canât, but because movement would confirm it. It would collapse the fragile space between knowing and admitting. My fingers stay where they are, curled loosely at my sides. My shirt hangs open, half-forgotten. My breath sits too high in my throat, shallow and controlled, like if I let it drop too deep, something in me will give way.
I take him in without turning my head.
First, the outline. A disruption in the room. The shape of a man where no one should be. It hits wrong before it makes sense, like my brain recognizes the pattern before it wants to accept it. Then the details begin to sharpen, slow and precise, like my mind is focusing a lens it doesnât want to use. The width of his shoulders. Broader than I remember. Or maybe just closer now. The quiet balance in the way he stands, like every inch of his weight is placed on purpose. The stillness, not passive, not idle, but controlled. Held. Like heâs deciding exactly how much of himself to show me and nothing more. The way the room seems to organize itself around him, like everything else has shifted to make space, like the furniture, the walls, even the air is adjusting to him being here. Like he belongs in a way that doesnât make sense, and still feels right.
He doesnât move.
Thatâs what unsettles me most.
If he moved fast, if he lunged, if he raised his voice, I could react. I could reach for training, for instinct. I could draw my weapon, create distance, name the threat, and respond to it. I could make this something defined.
But he doesnât.
He stands there like heâs already inside my life. Like this isnât an intrusion. Like this is a continuation. Like Iâm the one whoâs late to it.
My mind scrambles for structure, for protocol, for something that makes this manageable.
Call it in.
Secure the scene.
Distance. Control. Command.
The words feel rehearsed. Hollow. Like Iâve said them a hundred times in rooms that made sense. They echo in my head without landing anywhere useful, bouncing around without sticking, without meaning anything here. They donât fit in this space. They donât belong to this moment. They donât carry weight against the reality of him standing in my living room like the walls opened for him, like the locks were never real, like everything I trusted to separate me from him was just⊠decoration.
My gaze lifts anyway, slow and reluctant and inevitable, and finds his.
The impact is immediate.
Not loud. Not violent. Just complete. Like stepping off a ledge and realizing mid-fall there was never going to be ground beneath me.
He looks fine as fuck. Thatâs whatâs wrong.
It hits me before I can stop it, before I can dress it up as anything else. Not fear. Not a threat. Just thatâraw, immediate, undeniable. And I hate it. I hate how fast it comes. How easy. How it slides in like it belongs here too.
Out here, he should look different. Less contained. More volatile. More dangerous in a way I can categorize and control. Something I can label. Something I can fight.
But he doesnât.
If anything, he looks clearer. Sharper. Like everything I saw through reinforced glass was filtered, reduced, made safer by distance. Like the version of him I knew before was incomplete, intentionally dulled so I could stand in front of it without feeling thisâwhatever this is.
And this, this is the full version.
Unfiltered.
Uncontained.
The one that was always there, just waiting to step forward.
Waiting for me to see it.
Waiting for me to understand it.
My pulse stutters, then tries to correct itself and fails.
I become aware of my body in pieces. The cool air dragging over my skin, too noticeable, too sharp, like everything is turned up too high. My shirt hangs open, and I feel it, every inch of exposed skin, every place the air touches like itâs not supposed to. My stomach tightens, heat pooling low, spreading slow and heavy, and I hate how immediate it is. How real. How it doesnât ask for permission. My thighs tense without me telling them to. My shoulders lock, not pulling me back, not telling me to run, but holding me here. Holding me in place like Iâm waiting for something I shouldnât want.
Not retreat.
Anticipation.
He broke out.
The thought lands heavier now, with shape and consequence. He didnât just leave. He didnât run. He came here. To me.
Everything rearranges in my head with a clarity that feels almost cruel. The coin in my car. The note on the mirror. The subtle shifts in my apartment I couldnât explain. The cuff on my bed. The nights I woke up convinced I wasnât alone.
Not paranoia.
A pattern.
Preparation.
I swallow, throat tight, like my body is trying to force something down that wonât go.
My voice doesnât come. Not yet. Not while Iâm still suspended in that space between disbelief and recognition.
Because recognition is the problem.
Fear would be easier. Cleaner. Sharper. Something I could act on.
But this, this low, electric pull under my skin, this awareness of him that feels like itâs been building long before tonight, it doesnât register as fear.
It registers as inevitability.
Like something already decided.
My fingers twitch, barely noticeable.
He sees it.
Thereâs a shift in his expression. Subtle. Controlled. Not quite a smile, not anything I can point to, but something that acknowledges the moment. Like heâs tracking me, step by step, marking exactly where I stop resisting what this is.
My lungs finally draw in a deeper breath. I hold it. Feel it stretch through my chest. Then release it slowly, carefully, like Iâm recalibrating my body around him.
I donât step back. I donât step forward. I stay exactly where I am.
And that feels like a decision.
My voice, when it finally comes, is low and controlled. Not as steady as I wantâbut not weak either.
âHow long?â
The question hangs there, suspended between us.
Not how did you get in.
Not why are you here.
Just how long.
Because I already know the answer doesnât start tonight.
And whatever he says next, I know it doesnât end here.
an: my sleep schedule is trash right now, so drabbles for the next couple days and chapter 4 should be out over the weekend
