WHAT IS A STAKES RACE?
The stake race is a timed competition, this race is not held every day. This is usually reserved for special race days. The racetrack consists of markers placed on either side of a centerline. Race stakes show the top horses in a particular group; the groups can be three -year -olds, three -year -old fillies, or the winners of select races. There are many variables used to determine entries in a stakes race.
What is a Graded Stakes Race?
The races are ranked based on the quality of the field of runners and the amount of the purse. Other countries have a similar system. In the UK these types of races are referred to as Group races.
In Thoroughbred racing there are several different types of races, however the goal of most trainers and owners is to get their horses to win stakes races, more specifically graded stakes races. Graded stakes races are races where the highest quality racehorses compete with each other, to increase not only their winnings but also their potential as bloodstock. To be listed or marked for a career, it must go through a committee and meet certain requirements before it can obtain that status.
