Summary: The tale of how Remus and James decided to tell Sirius they're dating.

The squeaking hinges of the portrait hole warned Remus that he should shift his position on the couch away from his fellow Marauder. Two pairs of footsteps reached Remus and James’ ears as they sat on the couch nearest to the fire in the Gryffindor common room.

           “Two weeks!” Sirius bellowed as he reached his two mates. Peter was following behind him, looking more glum than usual.

           “Two weeks of what?” Remus asked. He lowered the book that he suddenly started reading; low enough so that they could see his eyes, but not the pink tinge on his cheeks.

           “What do you think, Moony? Detention,” Sirius said. He gave an overexaggerated sigh as he plopped down on the couch adjacent to his best friends. “I think Minnie is getting even stricter as the years go on.”

           “Or we’re just pulling off better pranks,” James said. He smirked at Sirius as he set his Potions book into his lap.

           “Wait,” Peter said. He stood and walked over to James, picking up the book he had just sat down. “Were you studying?”

           “I’ve been known to do that occasionally,” James said, quirking an eyebrow at Peter.

           “Yeah, but not on a Friday night,” Peter said with a small chuckle. He set the book back down in James’ lap and returned to his chair.

           “I think Moony here is a bad influence on you,” Sirius said.

           Remus’ cheeks darkened behind his book. “Hardly. Even I’m not studying tonight.” Remus could almost feel the glare James wanted to give him.

           “Anyway,” Sirius said with a shake of his head, “starting tomorrow, Wormtail and I have to report to McGonagall’s office after dinner.”

           “She’s making us clean,” Peter added. “Tomorrow night is the trophy room, Sunday is scrubbing the potion vials…”

           “Using no magic, of course,” Sirius said. “It was a harmless prank, though. Filch deserved it after calling Kowalski a git. We’re allowed to call him that, but that’s because he’s our mate.”

           “And he knows we’re only joking,” Peter added.

           “Besides, Filch’s hair will grow back anyway,” Sirius said. He slumped back against the back of the couch and sighed. “On the bright side, your potion worked, Moony.”

           “Knew it would,” Remus said. “Tried a bit of it on Marlene’s cat the other day.”

           Sirius let out a loud laugh. “Good. I always hated that thing anyway. Always rubbing up against you lot but ignoring me.”

           “The dog is complaining that the cat doesn’t like him,” James said with a smirk.

James decides he and Sirius are going to sit across from Remus and their other roommate and Remus’ only friend Peter in the great hall every day and he babbles on about anything he can think of as though they’ve been friends for years

Remus doesn’t say much at first but he listens and sometimes he laughs and there’s something about making the melancholy boy smile that makes James’ stomach flip in the best way

After a few days Remus starts making comments and pretty soon he’s an active participant in their mealtime conversations and the four boys start to spend most of their time together

James never stops being intrigued by Remus he’s still curious about what secrets his sarcasm hides and something being important to Remus is enough to peaks his interest in and start him doing research and asking questions

James starts borrowing Remus’ comic books, the stories are alright but the way that Remus can talk about them for hours and hours is by far his favorite thing about them

Remus goes to every Quidditch game despite knowing nothing about the game. James teaches him the rules, and while he can’t bring himself to care about professional quidditch James’ commentary and enthusiasm rubs off on him and has him loudly rooting for gryffindor every time

When James makes the team fourth year Remus wants nothing more than to simply be happy for his friend but for some reason it can’t be that simple because something about how carefree he is when he’s flying and the way pulling off sweaty t-shirts in front of Remus becomes a normal occurrence makes him feel dizzy

These weird feelings aren’t helped by James’ sudden fixation on the Gryffindor seeker Lily Evans. Remus’ stomach tangles up in knots every time James talks about her brilliant curls and gorgeous smile but he still listens to every last one of his ramblings because he’s James who’s always been there for him even when Remus was tired and hurt and tried to push him away.

Lily’s always been nice but his heart still sinks when he finds out that they’ll be prefects together fifth year. It’s hard to talk to her without thinking about James and how he beams about Lily in a way he wishes he would look at him.

One day during rounds Remus finds Lily in a classroom snogging Mary Macdonald and for a brief moment he allows himself to feel ecstatic before thinking about how heartbroken James will probably be if he finds out

He knows it’s not his secret to tell but he can’t seem to stop it from bursting out of him when James starts up on how he’s positively head over heels for the most clever person in Hogwarts and he’s so distraught he doesn’t even notice that James doesn’t seem surprised to hear that Lily and Mary are snogging

He does notice that James gets a lot more quiet after he tells him about Lily and he feels like shit for crushing his friends hopes like that. He sits him down in their dorm along one day and bursts out with apologies of how he shouldn’t have told him and and could he please forgive him for letting his stupid crush on him into such an arse

He didn’t really realize he’d confessed his feelings for James until he noticed that other boys eyes were wide

Remus tried sputtering out explanations but they were cut off with an-- I don’t care about Lily. I mean I did like her, but I found her and Mary snogging in the locker room fourth year. The nameless crush I’ve been rambling on about all year isn’t Evans it’s you.

James doesn’t care he’s beaming and confirms Remus’ question with a quick assurance of really before proving it with a kiss
