Stabmental (issue #3) YEAR: 1980 CREATED BY: Tom Craig and Geoff Rushton LOCATION: Haddenham SIZE: A4 WHAT'S INSIDE.... Tom Craig and Geoff Rushton (who was also known as Geoff Burton and later used the name John Balance) were still at school when they started working on Stabmental fanzine. At the same time they began experimenting with electronic music and later played two gigs as an industrial duo, which they also called Stabmental. They recorded an album’s worth of material, but only one track (“A Thin Veil Of Blood”) ever saw the light of day on a 1980 cassette compilation called “Deleted Funtime”, which gets a mention among the huge list of independent tapes printed on the A3 sheet that came with the third issue of their zine (which had a print run of 300 copies and an arty handprinted cover). There’s an interesting selection of bands inside - including F-Church, Half Japanese, Mephisto Waltz, The Residents and Negativland (if you’ve never heard Negativland’s “tribute” to Casey Kasem and U2 you really should). Records by the likes of Athletico Spizz 80, Throbbing Gristle, The Lemon Kittens and Eyeless In Gaza get the review treatment and a couple of fanzines (Geek and NMX) receive positive mentions. Cabaret Voltaire’s Chris Watson also has plenty to say about the band’s recent activities (such as attending the funeral of Ian Curtis). Rushton is best known for co-founding Coil with Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson in 1984, but he also played with the likes of Psychic TV, Chris & Cosey, Nurse With Wound, Death In June, Current 93 and others during a long and varied musical career.
