Thinking again about st:id and how awful it must’ve been for Jim to feel like he fucked up destiny
He went from the first movie, egotistical as hell, sitting in the captains chair as “acting first-officer”, having Spock From The Future feed into it by telling him the captains chair is where he belongs, even Nero telling him “Captain Kirk” is a name that’ll go down in history
And then messing things up so royally in Into Darkness that he turns to Spock and goes “the enterprise needs someone in that chair who knows what he’s doing, and that’s not me”
Not only would he feel like a let down to himself and to his peers, but he’d feel like he let down this cosmic expectation for who he was meant to be.

you ever have a ship that you’re like ehhh not really my thing and then you read That One Fic or see That One Artwork and it’s just all over? that’s what this ship is for me. and now i would die for everyone on the goddamn enterprise.
in no particular order:
You Don’t Have to (Say Yes) (192k) - this one is...rough. a loooot of angst for kirk and everyone else involved, but it also is one of the best versions of his character ive ever found. read at your own risk.
Fighting Gravity (137k) - this one has a really interesting premise where Spock ends up homeless and Kirk decides to take him on a road trip. the slow burn is so good.
All the Same Stars (136k) - unique au where spock meets kirk on a rescue mission and the two of them keep finding each other as the years go by. endlessly sweet.
How We Are (But Not How We’re Going to Be) (35.1k) - spirk goes to marriage counseling. end of story.
With My Feet Toward the Stars (let me remember you as you were when you existed) (33.2k) - i don’t really know how to describe this one, but it’s just so lovely. lots of existential spock.
So Wise We Grow (66.8k) - spock and kirk adopt a kid, and good god it’s so cute. the little baby vulcan. kirk’s panic. SPOCK’S panic.
The Lotus Eaters (93.5k) - spock and kirk find themselves stuck on a dangerous planet. slow burn because they’re spending most of their time trying not to die.
bonus rec for the one goddamn fic i can’t find where kirk gets infected with a spore that makes him cold all the time and spock gives him a sweater to keep warm and it’s cute and i CAN’T FIND IT
