Spaceshiptember 2024 - Entry 2: Space Trucking
These days, people are used to always havin' the whole galaxy at their fingertips. Thin tubes of folded space allow internet datastreams to pass from planet to planet to system to system in mere nanoseconds. I think the biggest lag time from one end of the colonised galaxy to the other is about half a second.
The only time you're off that grid is when you yourself are within folded space, which I often am for hours at a time. A big fuck-off cargo hauler can't travel quite as quickly as all that intangible data can, right?
People ask me, "Sol, don't you get lonely, bein' outta the reach of friends and family so much of the day?" And I say, "Hey, maybe I'm gettin' old, but it's actually really nice havin' some fuckin' peace and quiet for a change, babes!"
Besides, half the time I'm not even alone anyway, but that ain't anyone else's business. In ancient times they used to say a sailor had a sweetheart waitin' for her in every port. Well, nowadays, that's us truckers.
