A fight breaks out around an abandoned starship, one of many which once brought travellers and technological wonders from across known space. Its most valuable parts were salvaged long ago, but there are still many willing to fight over what's left.

After watching it grow for millennia, they knew what it was, the superluminal wake of some distant neighbor, extending century by century. Before they had even launched to space, they knew the universal constant was no barrier… for the small price of a supernova. Whoever launched that hypervelocity flight did so at the expense of their own star and all the worlds that might have surrounded it. This was the cost of lightspeed.
