SSM20 prompt #23: Something beautiful

Sarada makes a few observations about her parents. (Rated K)

She doesn’t remember much of Papa.

The village is convinced he is somewhere between a vagabond and a menace. The Seventh can’t decide whether to praise or insult him. But Mama makes him out to be a big softie, a gentle man whose heart is as vast as the ocean. 

And when Sarada reunites with her father again, she can’t help but feel hurt. 

Sasuke Uchiha is a man on a mission. Unflinching in the throws of danger. Unconcerned with his missing wife and the rumors of his supposed infidelity. Willing to do anything to get results. His no-nonsense, cold attitude makes her heart clench. 

It angers her.

Sasuke was against the headboard, while Sakura was in the bathroom. They had taken a hotel room for the night. Sakura was eight months pregnant, traveling was difficult for her and as soon as they could they took a hotel room. Even if Sakura told him she was okay, Sasuke refused to listen to her and always made sure they did not spend the night in the tent. They were still far from Konoha and he hoped they could come back to the village before the birth of their child.

Sakura walked out of the bathroom, wearing a tank top and shorts, which she found most comfortable for sleeping. Sasuke looked at her. He found her so beautiful. He had always found her beautiful, even when they were at the academy. But the pregnancy made her radiant. His gaze fell on her stomach and he smiled. Seeing her like this made the fact that they will have a child even more real. He had never seen anything so beautiful than her belly becoming round as their child grew. Sakura looked at him.

‘Why are you looking at me like that ?’ She asked.

‘Because you are very beautiful.’

Sakura blushed. He always had that effect on her when he said that sort of thing.

‘Right now, I don't feel beautiful.’

She joined him in the bed and they lay down. She tried to find the most comfortable position she could. Sasuke put his hand on her stomach and stroked it.

‘I love you,’ he said. ‘I love you both.’

Sakura kissed him.

‘We love you too.’

They kissed again and Sasuke felt the baby kick. He smiled, like every time he felt it. They both fell asleep, a refreshing sleep, before taking to the road to Konoha the next day.

Day 23: Something Beautiful - ssmonth

“ah, look, he’s blushing!”

sasuke scowls at shisui, “fuck off,” he tells him, “what are you even doing here.”

still looking rather pleased with himself, shisui laughs innocently and says, “i thought we were all walking to the meeting together.”

“you don’t have to walk with us,” sasuke shakes his head, but he sees itachi’s face and decides to leave shisui alone, for now.

sakura’s voice cuts in, “how do i look, sasuke-kun?”

he turns to look at her, and the blush that shisui had made a remark about deepens when he sees sakura fluttering her eyes at him. she is dressed in the new custom-made attire that he had ordered for her, especially for her first clan meeting, where he will announce that she will be his bride. 

he knows that it may cause an uproar, that he is not marrying a fellow uchiha as itachi had, but he has long ago resolved that he would marry haruno sakura no matter what.

she turns, and he can’t help but smile when he sees the uchiwa fan blazoned across the back.

“you look...ah,” he tries not to stutter, and ignores shisui’s loud snickering “...good,” he finishes lamely. 

sakura grins wholeheartedly, while izumi laughs and shisui yells that he sucks. she takes sasuke’s hand amid the chaos and murmurs a soft, “thank you.”

when they finally leave the house, itachi falls into step with him. he is surprised, because izumi is eight months pregnant and itachi has been glued to her side, anxious and doting this whole time. but itachi smiles at him, and sasuke knows that he wants to reassure him about the upcoming meeting.

“congratulations, otouto,” he says as they stare at sakura, who is walking ahead of them with shisui and izumi, “she looks beautiful.”

sasuke thinks of his father’s vaguely disapproving face when he had told them he intended to marry sakura, and the resigned sigh that he had let out, and thinks that if he can shoulder that, after chasing after his father’s approval his whole life, then he can take the ire of all his distant relatives. 

he remembers his mother’s happy eyes, not unlike itachi’s at this moment, and the face that sakura always makes when she catches sight of her ring, and thinks that it is all worth it.
