Thereâs something nobody tells you about working with Steve Rogers.
Itâs not just the discipline.
Itâs not just the weight of what he represents.
Itâs⊠his sense of humor.
Because, yeah, he does.
Itâs just that it shows up at the worst possible moments, often making light of serious situations when focus is crucial.
âThis is a terrible idea,â you mutter, ducking behind a half-destroyed structure, with the distant sound of metal clanging and something exploding not too far from you.
Steve, at your side, checks his shield with a calmness that should be illegal in a situation like this.
âIâve had worse.â
You look at him. You blink.
âDid you really just say that?â
âYes.â
âSteve, weâre trapped in a complex full of people who want to kill us.â
âCorrect.â
âWith no clear way out.â
âAlso correct.â
âAnd with a pretty high chance that this will end badly.â
Steve looks up at you and smiles.
âThen technically, itâs not the worst.â
You stare at him.
âI kind of hate you right now.â
âI know.â
The building creaks.
A long, deep sound, as if something inside is giving way. You both look up at the same time. Dust falls from the ceiling.
âThat didnât sound good,â you say.
âNo,â Steve admits. âBuildings donât usually do that when everythingâs going well.â
âThanks for the clarification.â
âThatâs what Iâm here for.â
You peek out just a little. Bad idea. A shot hits nearby; you duck back down suddenly.
âOkay, they definitely saw us.â
âIt looks that way.â
ââIt looks that way,â you repeat, incredulously. âTheyâre shooting at us, Steve!â

The interrogation room was silent. Steve Rogers stood on the other side of the table, motionless, his hands resting on the metal surface. Seated across from him was Jenna Rumlow. Confused. And increasingly aware that something was terribly wrong.
âFull name,â Steve requested.
Not âJenna.â Just protocol. Jenna frowned.
âAre you serious?â
âAnswer me.â
âJenna Marie Rumlow.â
The last name hung in the air, as if it were proof, as if it were enough. Steve held her gaze.
âRelationship to Brock Rumlow.â
âHeâs my father,â she replied. âWhere is this going?â
âHeâs linked to HYDRA. S.H.I.E.L.D. was infiltrated,â Steve continued. âHYDRA has been operating from within for years.â
âNo,â she repeated, now shaking her head. âThat doesnât make sense.â
âIt does.â
Jenna blinked once, as if she hadnât understood.
âNo, it doesnât,â her voice began to crack. âMy dad isnâtâŠâ
She didnât finish the sentence, because she didnât even know how to defend something that had just stopped making sense. Steve took a step toward her.
âHow long have you been involved?â
âWhat?â
âYour name appears in files.â
âThatâs impossible.â
âIt isnât.â
âI havenât done anything!â
The echo of her voice bounced off the walls, but it didnât change anything. Steve watched her, evaluating, gauging every reaction as if searching for a lie.
âIf you didnât know,â he said finally, ânow is the time to say so.â
âI didnât know. I had no idea.â
âI canât take that at face value,â Steve replied.
Jenna let out a brief, hollow laugh.
"Sure." She nodded slowly. âOf course not. So, you donât trust me. Do what you have to do, Captain. What else do you need, Captain?â she asked, emotionless.
Steve Rogers didnât answer right away.
âThereâs something else,â he finally said.
Jenna felt her stomach clench.
âWhat is it?â
There was a silence that felt too long.
âAll of this,â Steve began, taking a step toward her, ârefers to you and me. What does that have to do with HYDRA?â
Steve held her gaze.
âNo,â Jenna said, shaking her head slowly. âNo. Youâre not going to do that.â
âYour father was a HYDRA agent,â he continued. âYou were close to me. You had access. Information.â
âAre you saying that IâŠ?â
âIâm saying it might not have been a coincidence.â
Silence. Jenna looked at him as if heâd slapped her.
âDo you think I got close to you for a mission?â
Steve didnât answer directly. But he didnât deny it. And that was enough.
âSay it,â she whispered. âGo ahead and say it.â
Steve clenched his jaw.
âI need to consider the possibility that not everything was real.â
The world stopped.
ââNot everything was realââŠ?â
Jennaâs voice cracked slightly.
For the first time.
âThat maybe,â he continued, âwhat you felt, what you said, was part ofâŠâ
He didnât finish. He didnât need to.
âA mission,â she finished for him.
Silence.
âIn other words,âŠâ Steve hesitated slightly, but not long enough. âThere are things that could have been manipulated.â
Jenna frowned.
âWhat things?â
Steve looked her straight in the eyes.
âWhen you told me youâd never been with anyone.â
Jenna froze completely, as if she hadnât understood.
âWhatâŠ?â
âIt could have been a way to build trust,â he added. âTo appear vulnerable.â
âYouâreâŠâ Her voice trembled. "You're saying I lied about that.â
Steve didnât say yes or no, and once again, that was enough. Jennaâs eyes filled with tears; they didnât fall right away, but they were there, glistening.
âWowâŠâ The laugh that escaped her was broken. Unrecognizable. âWow, Steve.â She took a step back, as if she needed space to breathe. âYou know whatâs the worst part?â
He didnât answer.
âThat youâre not saying those words because you think itâs true. Youâre saying it because you need it to be. You need all of this to have been a lie, because itâs easier than accepting that you doubted me for no reason.â
Silence.
âJennaâŠâ
âNo.â
Now she stopped him completely. The tears finally fell, but her voice no longer trembled.
âDonât ever say my name again as if you still have the right to do so." Jenna took a deep breath. âIt was never a mission. I never lied to you.â Another step back, more distance. âAnd what hurts me the most isnât that you believe all thisââher eyes didnât leave himââitâs that you didnât even hesitate before saying it. This is over. Thereâs nothing to fix here; weâre done.â
Steve took a step toward her.
âJenna, waitââ
She shook her head.
âNo. Youâve done enough.â
She turned away. And that silenceâŠ
Steve nodded slightly. Once. Then he turned. And walked toward the door. The door opened. For a second⊠it looked like he was going to turn around. He didnât. The door closed.
And the sound⊠was too loud for such a small room.
Silence.
Jenna didnât move; she remained standing, turned away, staring at nothing, breathing⊠or trying to.
One.
Two.
Three.
The air wouldnât come in properly.
âNoâŠâ
It was barely a whisper; she brought a hand to her face, but it didnât workâtears began to fall.
âNo⊠no, noâŠâ
She shook her head, as if she could change itâshe couldnâtâand forced herself to stand up straight.
âItâs okay⊠Iâm fineâŠâ
That was a lie. Her hands were shaking. She remembered every word.
âA mission.â
âIt wasnât real.â
She closed her eyes.
âIt doesnât matterâŠâ
But it didn't matter, or maybe it did.
Too much.
Jenna let out a broken laugh.
âSureâŠâ
She covered her face.
âYouâre an idiotâŠâ
She took a deep breath.
She pulled herself together little by little.
When she opened her eyes⊠she wasnât crying anymore.

The idea started like almost all important things do in a house full of people: with an accident.
âIt wasnât my fault! â Ethan protested from the hallway, his voice somewhere between laughter and indignation.
âIt was! â Juliet replied, arms crossed. âI told you not to run with the pillow.â
âIt was a mission! â
âIt was the couch! â
The sharp thud against the wall still seemed to echo through the living room when Steve looked up from where heâd been reviewing some papers that clearly no longer mattered to him.
He sighed.
âTeam,â he said in a firm but gentle voice. âStatus report.â
Silence.
Then footsteps.
Lots of footsteps.
Too many footsteps.
James was the first to peek in, with that calmness of his.
âMinor impact,â he said with complete seriousness. âMinimal collateral damage.â
âA lamp almost died,â Juliet added from behind.
âBut it survived,â Ethan said, as if that settled the matter.
Then the twins appeared.
Two little storms on legs, with sparkling eyes and hands full of⊠fabric.
Lots of fabric.
âLook!â said one.
âStop right there! â added the other, proudly pointing at what was clearly⊠a sheet.
Behind them, Jenna walked in more slowly, with an expression that said it all: she knew exactly what was going on.
And she knew she wasnât going to stop it.
âDonât ask,â she murmured, passing by Steve. âItâs already started.â
Steve raised an eyebrow.
âWhatâs started?â
Jenna smiled faintly.
âThe construction.â
And then he understood.
He looked at the sheet.
Then, the pillows piled up in the hallway.
Then at the kids.
Then at Jenna.
He looked back at the kids.
âNo,â he said, without much conviction.
âYes! âThey all replied at once.
The living room ceased to be a living room in less than ten minutes.
First came the chairs.
Moved, dragged, strategically positioned.
Then the sofa cushions.
Then the blankets.
Sheets.
Quilts.
Anything that could serve as a structure, a roof, a wall⊠or makeshift decoration.
Steve watched at first, standing with his arms crossed.
Analyzing.
Because, of course, if something was going to be built⊠it had to be functional.
âThatâs going to fall,â he finally said, pointing to a corner where Ethan and Juliet were trying to hold a sheet over an unstable tower of pillows.
âNo,â said Ethan.
The structure tilted dangerously.
âYes,â added Steve.
The tower collapsed.
The twins laughed as if it were the best thing that had happened all day.
âYou need support,â Steve continued, now stepping closer. âA firm base, anchor points.â
âAnchor points? â Juliet repeated.
âLike this,â he said, grabbing a chair and placing it on its side. âIf you secure the fabric here and distribute the weightâŠâ
âIs he helping? â Jenna murmured, leaning against the wall with a crooked smile.
âHeâs taking the lead,â James replied calmly.
And yes.
He was.
Because within minutes, Steve was already on his knees on the floor, arranging pillows, tightening sheets, securing corners with a precision almost ridiculous for something that, in theory, was just a game.
âThis isnât just a fort,â he said, serious. âItâs a defensive structure.â
âItâs a pillow fort! â Juliet laughed.
âExactly,â he replied.
The inside of the fort was another world.
Light filtered through the fabrics, creating a warm, soft, almost magical atmosphere.
The blankets on the floor made everything comfortable.
Safe.
Small, but enough.
The twins were the first to go in, crawling in enthusiastically.
âHome!â said one.
âOurs! â added the other.
Ethan followed, followed by Juliet, who pretended she didnât care that much⊠though clearly she did.
James entered more calmly, settling into a corner as if he already knew that would be his spot.
Steve hesitated for a second.
He looked at the structure from the outside.
Then at Jenna.
âWill it hold? â
Jenna looked at him.
âItâs a pillow fort, Steve.â
âThat doesnât answer my question.â
She smiled.
âCome in.â
And he went in.
Being careful not to knock anything over.
Settling in gently.
Jenna went in last, closing the entrance with another blanket, leaving the interior lit only by the soft light seeping through the fabric.
âWelcome,â said Ethan, âto the secret base.â
âSecret from whom? â asked Juliet.
âFrom everyone.â
âThat doesnât make sense.â
âExactly.â
The twins snuggled up to Jenna, laughing for no particular reason.
James watched.
Steve⊠took a deep breath.
âRules? â he finally asked.
âThere are no rules,â said Juliet.
âThere are always rules,â replied Steve.
âThen you canât give orders,â Ethan added quickly.
Steve looked at him.
âThatâs not a rule; thatâs a direct attack.â
Jenna laughed.
âAdmit defeat, soldier.â
And for the first time in a long time⊠Steve didnât argue.
