Actually, though, people cycle between 2 major kinds of sleep: NREM and REM. NREM can be further broken down into 4 stages, the 3rd and 4th being deep sleep (otherwise known as slow wave sleep). REM stands for rapid eye movement, and it is the stage when people typically dream.
Both NREM and REM are really important if you’re trying to learn, study, or brainstorm ideas. Deep sleep is associated with better memory for facts you learned during the day, whereas REM sleep can help with creativity and drawing connections between things.
