*   blood   drips   from   her   mouth  ,   a   broken   gasp   falls  .  knees   bend   unwillingly  ,   slamming   her   body   to   the   ground   and   that   fall  ,   the   pain   shooting   through   her   body   at   knees   smacking   against   concrete  ,   is   the   least   of   her   worries  .   her   worries   start   with   the   blade   coming   out   her   chest  ,   a   blade   wielded   by   an   angel   found   its   home   in   her   chest  . 

her   mind   tries   to   replay   what   was   happening  ,   she   can’t   remember   how   this   happened  .   all   she   can   think   about   is   lissa  .   lissa   wouldn’t   be   able   to   save   her   this   time  ,   miles   apart   —  –   rose   felt   true   fear   as   she   knew   she   would   not   survive   this  ,   she   was   going   to   die   and   there   was   no   coming   back   this   time  . 

THE   WORLD   OF   THE   DEAD   WAS   COMING   TO   CLAIM   HER  .   a   growl   rips   itself   from   her   throat  ,   eyes   hard   as   her   hand   closes   around   the   blade   pulling   it   from   her   chest  .   she   would   not   die   without   a   fight  ,   everything   in   her   life   had   been   a   constant   battle   and   this   was   how   the   universe   saw   fit   to   end   her  ?   as   if   she   was   a   wild   animal   who   had   been   put   down  ,   as   if   she   was   a   monster  . 

she   screams   as   the   blade   slides   out  ,   blood   gushing   to   the   gaping   hole   in   her   chest   as   her   hand   drops   the   blade  ,   she   remembers   she’s   not   alone  .   alec’s   hand   presses   onto   her   wound   causing   her   to   gasp ,   and   dark   eyes   meet  .   if   she   had   thought   she   would   have   survived  ,   his   eyes   would   have   crushed   that   hope  . 

“   go  ,  ”   she   begs  ,   she’s   already   gone   but   she   can   save   him  .   “  tell  —  -   ” 

her   body   rocks   as   she   lets   a   sob   out  .   lissa  ,   lissa  ,   lissa  .   who   was   going   to   take   her   darkness  ?   who   was   going   to   save   lissa   from   herself   if   rose   hathaway   dies   here   tonight  ?   she   wants   to   fight ,   she   wants   to   stay   and   it   breaks   her   because   there’s   no    chance   she’s   staying  .    would  she  feel  the  bond  snap  as  her  soul  leaves ? 

“  lissa  ,   ”   her   last   word  .    his   hand   presses   harder  ,   as   if   his   touch   alone   could   keep   her   tethered   to   the   world   of   the   living   and   his   free   hand   smooths   her   wild   locks   into   place  .   dark   lashes   flutter  ,   she   takes   her   last   breath  ,  not   knowing  that   it   is   her   last  . 

forcing   her   weight   into   her   arms  ,   she   leans   up   and   chuckles  .   for   a   second  ,   she   feels   it   on   her   tongue  --  ---   a   confession  ,   a   secret   that   not   even   lissa   knew   and   she   wants   nothing   more   than   to   tell   her  ,   but   how   could   she  ?   it   would   hurt   to   share   what   she   can   not   have  ,   so   instead   she   bites   down   on   her   tongue  ,   eyes   drop   down   before   she   mutters  ,   “   what   are   we   doing   tonight  ?  ”
