So when the first thing she says upon him picking up is, âI need you to teach me how to make seafood risotto,â it takes him a few long seconds to register what heâs hearing.
And, of course, if the ringing of his phone was enough to wake him, itâs no wonder it would be enough to wake Goh, too, who grabs anxiously at his arm, mouthing, Whatâs wrong?
Gary gently sets his other hand on his shoulder to quell him, and asks their daughter, âYouâre aware the Internet is more awake at this hour than I usually am, right?â
âOh, Papa, please,â she begs. âI wouldnât have called if it wasnât an emergency!â
âRisotto is an emergency?â
âYours is the best, so I need to know the secret. All the recipes Iâve looked at donât make any sense, and I only have a couple more hoursâŠâ
âWhy didnât you just ask me yesterday when it was a respectable time?â
âI thought I could figure it out on my own, but I was wrong and so I really, really, really need your help. I promise Iâll make it up to you! Iâll, um, send you three bags of that coffee you like in Lumiose City.â
Gary glances over at Goh, and whispers, âYour daughter does bribes like you do.â
âTell her she woke me up too, so I should get a bribe as well,â he whispers back.
âI can hear both of you guys,â Lemon says, annoyed. âAre you gonna help me or not?â
âSwap one of those bags of coffee for some Lumosian chocolates and you have a deal.â
Goh grins at him. âYouâre the best.â
âOkay, okay, fine. Iâm video calling you now, okay?â She doesnât give him a chance to respond before sheâs hung up on him. Ten seconds later, the screen lights up again with a video call; when Gary accepts it, Lemonâs face fills the screen, serious and determined.
âFirst of all,â Gary says, âwhatâs the occasion? You do realize there are probably a hundred places you can get five-star quality seafood in Shalour City, right?â
Her cheeks go pink. âW-well, sure, but I donât want Lime to think I didnât put in the effort, you know? Itâs our first anniversary ever, soâŠâ
Itâs so like herâalways striving to be the best, no matter what it takes. Everything at one hundred and fifty percent. Especially when it comes to the people she loves.
âIf you want to make a romantic gesture,â Gary tells her, âa good meal alone isnât necessarily gonna cut it.â
Her eyes widen. âItâs not?! Should I go back to the store?! I think I have time... She told me she would be back from her training session at twenty-hundred hours sharp.â
âYou could go back to sleep,â Gary murmurs, carding his fingers gently through his husbandâs hair. âI donât mind getting up so you can have some peace and quiet.â
But Goh shakes his head. âIâm awake now. Besides, itâs good to hear from her.â
There was a time when Lemon would call him every day. Just to tell him how her journey was going. Sheâs older now, though, and preoccupied with other things than reassuring her dad that she is safe and she is happy and she is doing everything she ever dreamed of and more. By Garyâs estimation, she still calls him at least once a week, but he is acutely aware that, even after all these years, Goh has a hard time letting her say good-bye. Even if he knows as well as Gary does that this is how she was always meant to spread her wings.
Once sheâs out the door and jogging down the street, she demands, âWhat else do I need?â
âWell, you got flowers, right?â
âItâit completely slipped my mind!â She comes to a screeching halt; the expression on her face reminds Gary of how Goh looks when he is lost in thought. âUmâŠlet me think⊠She wouldnât want roses, but maybe⊠Ohh, I donât know. I canât think!â
âThey say peonies are very romantic flowers,â Goh chimes in. âEspecially for anniversaries.â
âReally? Wow, thatâs perfect, then! Okay, so whereâs the nearest flower shopâŠâ
âYou know things like this and youâve never thought to get me flowers for our anniversary?â Gary teases. âHow unromantic.â
Their attention is brought back to Garyâs phone at the sound of a groan from their daughter.
âWhatâs the matter, Lemon?â
âI donât know anything about flowers,â she despairs. âWhat do peonies even look like?!â
âTurn the camera around,â Goh tells her. âIâll point them out to you.â
She does, and they locate the most colourful of the blooms they can in almost no time at all. Which turns out to be a very good thing, because now Lemon is thinking about all the other things sheâs forgotten about:
Gary barely withholds a snort of laughter at that; Goh is slightly less successful, and earns a glare from Lemon for it.
âCan we focus here, people?â she demands. âIâm running out of time! Papa, what should I make for dessert? It has to be something quick and easy⊠Thereâs just no timeâŠ!â
If sheâd planned a little farther ahead, of course, that wouldnât be a problem; and Gary has no doubts that sheâs been planning this for a good while now, but having a plan and knowing how to execute it are two totally separate thingsâand that second one has always taken her a lot more practice than the first.
âIâll brainstorm ideas while you get the things you need from the store for the risotto,â he says. âFair?â
Sheâs agreeable to that, and her shopping goes off without a hitch. Despite how busy it clearly is, she is an efficient shopper, finding everything she needs without getting lost even a single time. But by the time theyâve picked up all the ingredients they need for Garyâs risotto recipe, they still havenât settled on a dessert.
âWell, what does she like?â Gary probes. âSomething sweet? Something tart?â
âUmâŠsweet, maybe?â
âMaybe?â
âI donât know! The only dessert Iâve ever really seen her eat is when we make sâmores while weâre camping!â
Gary raises an eyebrow at that. âThen why are you asking me what to make for dessert? You clearly already have the perfect idea. Iâm sure even if you canât make a campfire, Victini could help you roast some marshmallows.â
âButâŠthatâs not very romantic, is it?â
âRomance isnât about doing whatâs in the movies, Lemon,â says Goh gently. âItâs about seeing the person you love for exactly who they are, and making them feel loved for it.â
âAnd,â Gary adds, âto share in things youâve enjoyed together. If you eat sâmores together that often, thenâŠI bet she already associates you with them. So, thatâs something she loves because it ties her to you.â
As they speak, her eyes go wide with realization. Her voice is little more than a whisper when she admits, âIâŠwasnât really thinking about it like that.â
âThatâs because youâre like your papa.â Goh glances up at him, eyes glimmering teasingly. âAlways about the big, dramatic gestures.â
âYouâre not really one to talk,â Gary grumbles.
âMaybe so,â he allows. âBut the point is, the small things add up to bigger things. Right? So if you want your feelings to reach her, thenâŠyou already know better than either of us do exactly how to do that.â
A beat passes, and then her expression shifts againâsteely resolve, her characteristic determination.
âOkay,â she says. âBut I still need you to stay on the phone and help me cook the risotto, okay?â
In the advent of the showâs ending, it will be up to us to steer this ship. I will therefor propose that we decide on a date for a VHAD WEEK. (Provided that someone else havenât already thought of it, making me look like a clown.)
My suggestion is week 12 in late March, or week 16 in April.

MOTH HAS A NEW AU RAHHHHH
I've not drawn much for it but we have Thad being used as an armrest, and V's new design with COOLER LEGS!!!
...
welcome to the Banished Uzi AU, where it's not really even Uzi being the MAIN focus of the au but... these two. LITERALLY.
au explanation below vvvv
The premise is that it starts a bit after Uzi got fucking banished from the bunker because she manifested her solver abilities earlier (think before pilot) and was considered a danger to everyone else. Thad, who wasn't particularly friends with her but he DOES feel bad for her-- choses to go outside the bunker to try to find her.
He's had some close calls, but it's very CLEAR that Uzi is avoiding him. Who can blame her, she feels like she's been betrayed and is VERY distrustful of ANYONE who comes from their colony. Even Thad who was nice to her.
In the process though he meets V, who's ALSO looking for someone-- N. It turns out that N and Uzi managed to become friends through a very... interesting situation. But in the end, Uzi convinces him to ditch his team because he could do so much better. And she's right honestly! It's then what leads the two to start travelling Copper-9 together. And V is none the wiser, only knowing that her teammate that she acts like she doesn't give a fuck about that she ACTUALLY gives a fuck about is missing. J doesn't care as much.
Anywayyyy back to Thad and V-- V was GOING to kill him but he used his jock charm to make her change her mind... aka he frantically begged her to spare him because he's just looking for his friend who's got these weird powers and he mentions this particular symbol which causes V some alarm. AND he mentions he's seen V's teammate with Uzi on one occasion where he ALMOST got to her again but he grabbed her and flew away.
....
It's what leads them to the situation where they're in now: a truce of sorts as they BOTH are looking for those two fuckers. This truce is what makes V start opening up again and finding herself ACTUALLY giving a fuck about another drone again... a worker drone at that. Thad comes to realize that maybe V isn't ALL bad and that really underneath all of that murderous intent is just a horrendously broken individual. And that much of how she acts outwardly is also a facade.
Course, at some point I'm going to write this as a fic. The pov will be alternating between Thad and Uzi, but the MAIN pov is Thad here. Think most of the chapters being his perspective, and then sprinkled within it is Uzi's as it covers her experiences being out in the wastelands of Copper-9.
