Can you please help us identify my friend’s “garage” spider? I think it’s a cross spider, but I’m not sure

It's not a cross orbweaver, actually! Despite the marking that looks kind of like a cross. Normally an actual cross orbweaver (Araneus diadematus) will have a cross made of white dots on the front of the abdomen right behind the head. This lady looks like a spotted orbweaver in the genus Neoscona.

It’s that time of the year!
This gal showed up and built the most stunning web in our basil overnight. The web looked as though it was floating, but it was actually half attached to the tree a few feet away, which just, wow! How the hell did she do that? I am very much happy to meet my new neighbour.

I think this is a spotted orbweaver (Neoscona crucifera).
