“Our office has all of the furniture it may need,” Dmitri says tersely. “Or is this a gift of—? Some kind—?”

Automatically, he’s leaning forward, inspecting the Spot’s gift for potential holes and cracks and nooks and crannies. 

“Nevermind,” Dmitri says tersely, upon failing his mission. It’s literally just a fucking lamp. 

ADORABLE IS RIGHT. Something about this guy works on Joe immediately. Maybe it's being out-charmed, out-talked. Maybe it's knowing almost immediately that he isn't the smartest guy in the room. He couldn't articulate why, but there's an aspect about that forced humility that is, admittedly, kind of a turn-on.

don’t know if he’s doin’ ‘dis on purpose or otherwise,   ya’ know ?    spot’s bettin’ on ‘da former,   but,   really.    who knows.   so,   yeah.   all he’s left t’ do is just   -    observe this man,   as he’s walkin’ around,   chattin’ up like it ain’t a big deal.

and well   -   it ain’t like ‘da guy’s doin’ anything wrong,   mind you.    spot’s just curious,   is all.   the hoodie is probably one o’ his oldest clothin’ he’s ever owned,   and one he didn’t throw out or let jacklyn donate to goodwill.   and it’s got oil grease that spot can point out even from where he’s sittin’,   and he’s pretty sure the shoulder there is patched with a whole entire fabric altogether.
