3D Printing Guardian - Wall Mounted Spool Holder

As ever, it’s been a while. I’ve been busy, sad, happy, depressed, elated, dancing.
We recently had the opportunity to buy a 3D printer. And so we did buy it. Meet Tronxy X1.
And I made a spool holder for the PLA we need to use with it.
I used the tools in our wood room, and cut down a pine plank we had. I cut 3 pieces, all rectangles, and made sure the uprights were the same size.
I used the mitre saw and cut from one corner to almost the middle on the side piece, and then used that same angle to form the two triangular uprights. Then I used a Forsner bit to cut the hole through both uprights to thread through the dowel.
As the dowel was thinner than the holes I drilled, I used Fusion 360 to design some stops to prevent the dowel from sliding out, and then used the 3D printer to print them out. I also modified the design a little to make some simple tubes to act as reel separators for when we buy more filament.
A thoroughly satisfying and simple solution to a problem, and I got to use all of my tools in the wood room and the 3D printer!
3D Printing Guardian - Filament Spool Holder
Disguised as a wall mounted spool holder 3D Printing Guardian watches over the whole 3D printing process. He immediately made our lives easier as now we can replace a spool in seconds. It is especially handy when changing filament for multicolor 3D printing. The idea was to design something functional but with an interesting theme to it. That’s how our 3D Printing Guardian was born.

Present day people are unaware of his existence and importance. 3D Printing Guardian is reduced to play various domestic roles because he can’t reveal himself. People are not ready to learn about the full potential of 3D printing. For now, the Guardian is protecting humans from themselves and teaching them lesson by lesson.Â

The original design that I remixed was great for filament spools with very narrow holes in the center, but the spindle had too much hollow space inside -- this made support removal difficult, especially when printing in the default orientation. Originally intended for the Creator Pro series, this spool holder was remixed by me specifically for the Creator Max 2. This design removes most of the hollow space inside the spindle and changes the orientation so that the part prints on its side with minimal supports.
Here’s the published model for my remixed spool holder for the FlashForge Creator Max 2. Thingiverse is still a bit wonky, but I created a brand new account using external authentication, so I should be fine. Kind of sad that Thingiverse doesn’t seem to be able to handle 3MF files, so I was forced to upload the STL in addition to the 7Z archive with the actual model and sample .gx from Flashprint. Works great with dual extrusion with a minimal amount of support material.
Edit: Also, Thingiverse really needs to update their lists of printers from each manufacturer. You can’t save information about the build without specifying both the manufacturer and the model, but the Creator Max 2 isn’t in their list of FlashForge printers. No free-form text is allowed, either.
In search of the perfect spool holder
Guess what I'm printing? The default spool holders that came with the new Flashforge printer are fine, but they mainly fit spools of filament from Flashforge. I found a couple spool holder designs around the web, and one printed just fine with minimal supports in an upright orientation (i.e., with the spindle sticking straight up). That's cool, but I wanted something with a narrower spindle that would accommodate even more types of filament reels. The model you see printing here is the result of remixing a design I found that was more problematic for printing. More soon...
