His eyes are hazel (not fanfiction green?!?) and one of his aliases reminds me that once upon a time we didn’t completely live in a nightmarish hellscape here in the US.

The FBI can’t risk losing these two again, so they’re sending a helicopter. In the meantime, Henriksen shouldn’t take his eyes off the two wanted criminals. He decides to taunt them.

Henriksen’s boss, Deputy Director Steven Groves, shows up in the helicopter and hands Henriksen a pile of paperwork while he wanders off to find the fugitives. He finds them and after a quick greeting, starts shooting them! Dean gets hit in the shoulder before Sam and Dean hold the guy back. It’s then that Sam sees his eyes turn ---he’s a demon. Sam starts chanting the exorcism and the demon bolts, leaving Henriksen and the local PD to find the Deputy Director dead on the ground and Sam holding a gun. The boys insist that they didn’t shoot him and, indeed, there is no bullet wound. Sam informs them that the man was possessed. They try contacting officers outside the jail cell, but only hear static.

Once outside, Henriksen’s partner finds out why.

They’re all dead. The helicopter then explodes and the agent meets his own demise.

Inside, things are a tad chaotic. There’s no phone, internet, or cell coverage. Then the lights go out. Henriksen orders the station on lock down. He then goes to berate Sam and Dean for their latest plan of escape.

They assure him that whatever is out there, isn’t going to help them. Henriksen refuses to hear the word “demons.” He leaves and Nancy the secretary peeks in on them. They plead for help --or a towel for Dean’s wound, but she runs away silently --but comes back almost instantly with a towel. She hands over the towel but Sam grabs her arm and she screams, alerting an officer who helps escape. Dean wants to know Sam’s angle: San grabbed Nancy’s rosary.

Later, the brothers discuss why the demons are coming for them Dean wonders if they have a contract out on them “Think it’s because we’re so awesome? I think it’s ‘cause we’re so awesome.” Sam is not amused.

An officer comes in to move the boys, but then Henriksen comes in and shoots him. Sam grabs  Henriksen and gives him a very holy swirly, expelling the demon. The deputy and Nancy look on. Henriksen comes to and admits, “I shot the sheriff.” Dean, MY HERO, replies, “But you didn’t shoot the deputy.” They then tell him he was possessed. His brain clearly does a little rainbow wheel moment to process, but then releases the brothers from their chains.

Sam breaks out his mad spray painting skills and wards the joint. Dean gets patched up and tells them to gather the salt, and then asks where is car is.

Dean races out to his car in the jail’s impound lot and weapons up.

Meanwhile, lights flicker nearby and the smoke monster - I mean, demons - blaze their way towards the jail. Dean looks back at the maelstrom growing behind him and races for the building.

Smoke streams towards the police station, buffeting it and rattling at the doors and windows. But the building holds fast. They’ve put enough salt around the borders to keep the barriers strong. The first assault over, Dean hands out anti-possession medallions for everyone to wear.

Outside the townspeople gather. It’s their friends, their loved ones. And they’re all possessed.

Victor gets the monster-hunting 101 treatment from Dean as they load up shotgun shells with salt. Victor handles this all incredibly well...which is why we love him.

“My job is boring. It’s frustrating,” Victor tells him. “I’ve been busting my ass for 15 years to nail a handful of guys and all this while, there’s something off in the corner so big...” He kind of regrets spending his whole life on the long slow fight against normal, human criminals, when he could have been fighting the wider world of monsters.

Dean tells Victor with his usual bravado that he thinks the “world’s gonna end bloody. But it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight. We do have choices. I choose to go down swingin’.” Put that on a t-shirt. Dean Winchester, resistance hero <3

Victor and Dean’s bromance is interrupted by a crash. It’s Ruby! She got in through a broken salt line on the window. She grouchily informs them that there’s a new player in town: Lilith. Dean’s pissed that Sam didn’t tell him about her.

And Ruby’s pissed once she learns that they lost the Colt. Wherps. She offers a demon super bomb spell so strong it’ll even kill her. All she needs is a virgin.

Dean I’ll-pretend-to-be-a-virgin Winchester tries to sacrifice himself, but Ruby isn’t falling for it (because she’s not a babbling idiot, come on guys). It turns out there IS a virgin in the station, though. It’s Nancy!

Great! It’s a plan. Ruby gets ready to move forward with...ripping Nancy’s heart out of her chest. Yeesh. Let’s just...take that all back. Everyone argues over Nancy’s fate until Nancy interrupts. She’ll sacrifice herself to save her friends outside.

Victor cuts in when the argument starts getting out of hand. Nobody gets sacrificed, damn it. He and Dean share a best buddies look of friendship over this!!!

Sam, meanwhile, hasn’t picked a side yet. Should he kill Nancy or save her. If he saves her then he’s potentially endangering all the possessed townspeople by not bombing out the demons. Classic demon trolley problem. Dean’s extremely concerned about Sam’s moral fog and pulls Sam aside. They can’t “throw away the rule book and stop acting like humans.” They’ve got people with them now that they can save...so they’re gonna do it. Besides. Dean has a plan. It’s a good one.

Wait for it…

“Open the doors, let them all in and we fight.”

Dean. Bean.

Ruby tells Sam she’s done with him and they let her out of the police station. She brazens her way through the demon crowd and exits, stage parking lot.

Inside, Dean’s plan begins. They all remove the salt lines and scratch away the devils traps. Then, armed with salt shotguns, they wait...

One by one the demons invade and the fight quickly gets dirty. Dean and Victor end up back to back, helping each other out and I’m singing BEEEEST FRIENDS FOREEEEEVER.

Nancy and the other cop wait on the roof. “When this is over, I’m gonna have so much sex,” Nancy vows (but not with that dude). Then they scatter salt at all the doors and windows...on the outside of the building. The demons are all trapped inside. The battle rages on.

It’s looking bad for Sam and Dean when Victor breaks free from the demons attacking him and triggers a tape deck. Sam’s voice sounds over the loudspeaker and an exorcism begins!

Outside, a big bad demon runs past Nancy and spares her. I’m glad to see that she’s going to survive this!

All the demons smoke out of all the people, swirl up into a cloud and, trapped, explode into flame. Which is kind of badass.

They’re left with a station full of recovering ex-demons. Victor bids the Winchesters farewell. He’s going to fake their death. Dean looks at Victor. BEST BUDS.

The Winchesters skedaddle.

A little later, a small girl enters the station. She tells Nancy that she’s looking for two brothers. “One’s really tall, and one’s really cute.” (Oh you’re not wrong, honey.) She introduces herself as Lilith and her eyes turn white. Eeesh. She destroys the folks in the station. So much for Victor’s and Nancy’s survival.

Ruby bursts into the Winchesters’ hotel room and tells them to turn on the news (I love that demons are just seemingly tuned to TV signals). They see footage of the charred remains of the police station. Everyone was killed including Victor and Nancy.

(I didn’t see Victor die. Did you? I definitely did not. Dean and Victor: best friends forever!)

For Science

Ruby blames them for this disaster. If they’d done it her way, the townspeople AND the station folks would have survived. But since they didn’t pull a big demon nuke, the blood’s on them. Sam listens intently to Ruby…

Oh, Sam, your first (second, third, fifty-fourth?) mistake.

Dean does some quick math in his head (I LOVE when Dean visibly counts to himself. It’s something so endearing and consistent about Dean over the years.)

Lisa is consoling her friend about her ex-husband’s untimely demise. Her friend confesses that she feels there’s something wrong with Katie, her daughter. In fact, she’s not sure it’s actually her daughter. She goes to collect Katie to leave the party.

Dean walks in and ever so casually asks Lisa if Ben is his. (Natasha: dies laughing) Lisa dismisses his concerns, but it’s clear Dean’s still a little nervous. But even under possible parental distress, Dean’s able to work the case and ask Lisa about the death of her friend’s ex. Lisa admits to a lot of bad things in the neighborhood.

Sam, meanwhile, gets a visit from Ruby. Cue dramatic zoom. Sam wants to know more about her knife that can kill demons (those innocent days! I don’t even think he knows she’s a demon here!) Ruby wants to talk about Sam’s ESP -- and his mom’s friends (what?? My mind is fuzzy about this.) As she’s leaving, she tells Sam there’s a case in this town.

Two seconds later, Dean calls and tells Sam there’s a case in this town --four other people have died in Lisa’s neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Lisa’s friend wakes from a nap (after falling asleep reading The Historian. Lol, I completely understand Friend of Lisa, but Show, a book about bloodsuckers is a little too on the nose.) Her daughter is watching her like a little creepoid.

The girl is creepy and clingy and has some seriously messed up skin when the mom sees her reflection in the mirror.

Sam investigates the other homes where people died.

As the woman points out where her husband fell and died, Sam notices blood on the windowsill, and a blank staring little girl looking out the window --and a sucker-like hickey on the back of the mom’s neck.

Friend of Lisa’s is rubbing her own neck when she’s making Katie her lunch. She tells her daughter to eat and then locks herself in the bathroom to inspect her own sucker hickey. Eww. There’s a pounding on the door. She wants in. She continues to rattle the door while Friend of Lisa’s grows increasingly worried. The rattling stops when the doorbell rings. She rushes downstairs to find Katie answering the door to the neighborhood sunshine representative, bearing a basket of goodies. The woman inquires how they’re doing, and then about if they’re planning on keeping the house. Cold, lady. Friend of Lisa’s slams the door in her face, only to find Katie right there demanding ice cream.

Out and about, Dean sees a sad Ben, sitting alone. He joins Ben on the bench and asks if there’s something wrong. Ben’s as chatty as his not-father when it comes to emotions. Some kid borrowed Ben’s game and now he won’t give it back. Ben refuses to let Dean meddle. Dean’s proud of the little guy for wanting to fight his own fights. (I hold back my commentary about toxic masculinity being passed down to the next generation. My, how far we’ve come, Dean Let-It-Go Winchester.)

Ben heads up to the group of bullies and calls out the kid who stole his game. Ben knees him in the balls and grabs his game while Dean grins from the sidelines. Lisa storms up and berates Ben for kicking another kid. Dean gets the Mom Look of Death ™.

Lisa (RIGHTLY SO) reminds Dean that they spent a single night together years ago and it is hella creepy for Dean to be hanging out with her son right now. Like, I KNOW RIGHT? (Team Lisa) Lisa and Ben head out, only for Ben to run back to Dean and give him a big thank you hug. It’s super adorable.

And then...the adorableness dies swiftly as creepy children in the playground turn in unison to stare at Dean.

And back with Friend of Lisa, her daughter is aggressively telling her that she loves her while mom, weeping, buckles her into the car. Mom adjusts the rearview and catches a glimpse of...well…

Drive, momma, drive! The little girl is still JONESING for ice cream so mom drives them to a nice refreshing...boat ramp. She puts the car in neutral, releases the parking brake, and the car and child slide slowly into the water. (I find this scene particularly horrifying because of its layer of real life parallels so GOOD JOB writers for making me feel awful.)

Mom gets home, emotionally ravaged, only to find a water soaked little girl sitting at her table. “Hi mummy,” the girl says. “Can I have that ice cream now?” Fuuuuuuuck.

Sam, meanwhile, is diligently doing research when Dean bursts into the hotel room. (Side note: there’s been so little Sam in this episode that I was actually surprised to see him again. In my defense, I’m tired. In my defense, I’m also distracted by creepy kids.) Sam’s function is clearly to dump a ton of lore on us. We learn that changelings aren’t just babies. They can be kids - and there’s one at every house that’s had a death. They climb in through the windows and steal the real children, then feed on the back of the mothers’ necks for a few weeks. (Query: it’s heavily implied that changelings only feed on women. Does this mean that the children of gay male couples are safe? Duly noted, man.)

Dean preps the weaponry. Just...fire. Lots of fire.

Sam thinks the kids might still be alive somewhere underground. Dean low key flips out about the idea of any of the kids getting snatched and heads straight to Lisa. When Lisa opens the door she looks harried, Dean looks dorky. Awww they’re so cute. (Man, I love Dean and Lisa almost as much as I love Dean and Cas. It doesn’t hurt that Lisa’s smile is like the frickin’ sun.)(Boris: Vigorously nods in agreement.) Dean hands Lisa a credit card and tells them to go on vacation together. Guys, it’s a TOTALLY NORMAL gift for a 9-years-later hookup to give. She asks Dean about the hinky name on the card but then Ben shows up. “Make him go away, Mommy,” says a decidedly chillier Ben. Lisa takes the hint (while Dean’s hunter hackles rise) and the door gets slammed between them.

Awwww shiiiiit, a monster’s got Ben!

Dean stalks around the house, looking for clues. (Again, in the hunting context we’re like okay COOL good job and in the real world context we’d be going SHIT LISA CALL 911 he’s outside of your house!!!) Dean finds the telltale blood on the sill. Ben’s done got snatched. Dean races to the car. It’s not blood on the sill, he tells Sam. It’s….

“Red dirt,” Sam concludes as we scene jump to one of the buildings under construction. (SIDE NOTE dudes I used to live near Sedona AZ the capitol of red dirt and when dried it did not look like blood. What I’m saying is, someone get some decontamination crews to this neighborhood. It’s a biohazard zone. No wonder property’s so cheap.)

They investigate the house. Dean finds the basement, hears a noise, and heads on down. He finds trapped kids (including Ben) and tells him that he’ll be free soon. Meanwhile, Sam (Sam is here too!) gets confronted by the nosy realtor with the muffin baskets. Downstairs, Dean discovers the caged realtor in the basement. Wherps. Sam’s smart, though, so instead of getting talked into buying a house he whips out his trusty business card.

Fake Ben gets all up in Lisa’s grill, asking for food, so Lisa offers him pizza. Fake Ben agrees and Lisa notices his reflection in her shiny coffee table. Yeesh.

Lisa may be having a shit time, but Dean’s enjoying his father(????) & son bonding moment as they work together to free and comfort the other children. Dean busts a hole through the window and gets everyone out. Just then momma changeling appears. Dun dun DUN.

Lisa confronts fake Ben. “I love you, mommy,” he says in response. Lisa grabs her keys and gets the fuck out of town, but there are kids in her lawn ready to go all Children of the Corn on her. She heads back inside.

Momma changeling gives a good fight, beating the shit out of Dean and Sam. All the while, Ben calmly gets all the kids out. Sam blasts the changeling mom with fire and the fire cascades to all the changeling children. They erupt into flame and ash, including the ones tormenting Lisa and Friend of Lisa.

Lisa races out as the sun rises and greets Ben joyfully. They head inside, Lisa sets Ben up with food and headphones, and then Dean fills her in on his line of work.

Dean asks one more time about Ben’s parentage and Lisa sets him straight (OR DOES SHE). She took a blood test...it was a dude she met in a bar. “I swear you look disappointed,” she says as Dean looks low key devastated.

“Some stuff happened to me recently, and, uh. Anyway, a guy in my situation. You start to think, you know. I'm gonna be gone one day, and what am I leaving behind besides a car?”

Dean. You’re breaking my fucking heart. Lisa asks him to stay for a while and he gets the fuck out instead because he doesn’t think he deserves good things. (weeps some more)

For Science:

Basically if they’re both in the same frame I am DEAD. They’re tooooo pretttyyyyy.

I uncurl from my ball of sorrow to recap the Sam is Here Too ™ portion of the episode. He’s checking up on his mom’s friends. They’re all dead. He meets Ruby and she tells him they’re dead because of the Yellow Eyed Demon. Sam demands to know who she really is and she goes all black eyed on him. Ruby insists that she’s on his side. “It’s all about you,” she tells him. She’s just trying to figure out how all the puzzle pieces fit together. And if he plays ball, she’ll help him save Dean.

Sidenote: I recall seeing an interview or con video once where they talk about this scene --and Jared was too afraid to be in the same room as the snake. Bravo on the editing. I wouldn’t have guessed.

Later, an increasingly jumpy Dean shows Sam his investigation into the death of Frank O’Brien’s wife --manic depressive who hung herself. Sam finds nothing at Frank’s apartment. It’s a real puzzle.

It’s also a real puzzle to Sam why Dean’s driving 20 mph. “Safety’s a crime now?” Dean asks indignantly. He also is not suicidal and won’t turn left into oncoming traffic (Cautiously smart, my friend.) It’s then that Sam hears his EMF machine go berzerk. “Am I haunted? Am I haunted?!” DEAN BEAN.

The next day (not sure where they slept the night before…), Sam surprises Dean jamming out to Survivor. He’s got scratch marks on his arm AND he passes on doughnuts. Sam’s reaction shots are PURE GOLD this episode. Sam talked to Bobby and Dean appears to be haunted with Ghost Sickness. It can spread like the flu once one person is infected. Frank contracted it first and passed it to friends --and Dean. They have to kill the ghost that started it all to save Dean. (But first Sam has to move their hotel room from the fourth floor to the first for Dean.)

Later, Dean’s reading up on Ghost Sickness when he starts coughing and hallucinating words on the page.

(Are all these close ups really necessary?)

Later, Sam returns with no news on who the ghost is and Dean laments on being near death again. It’s nice (but sad) to rewatch and realize how much they did address Dean’s Hell trauma.

He then coughs up a woodchip (I legit can’t breath during this every time) and Sam realizes that Dean’s a clue. “I don’t want to be a clue,” Dean whines. BBY.

They head to the local abandoned lumber yard. Dean refuses to go inside, but Sam needs backup. Dean drinks a fair amount of hunter’s helper...and decides that he’ll “man the flashlight.”

They head inside to investigate and find a kitten.

Sam is increasingly losing it. And Dean’s weak little “wait?” at the end of the scene? GAH.

They find more clues about Frank’s wife and Luther Garland, when the saw mill starts working. Manning the flashlight, Dean’s too paralyzed to say or do anything when he sees someone standing in the corner of the room.

Dean takes off and finishes off the rest of his booze while Sam blasts the ghost with salt. Their ghost is Luther Garland.

Back at the sheriff’s department, a drunk little Dean Bean flirts a little bit with the deputy. A drunk man’s words is a sober man’s thoughts, Dean.

Sam snatches his brother away before he gets the dude’s number. (I mean, he was trying to reach into his pocket for a pen, right?)

The sheriff, through the intercom, asks what the Winchesters wanted and the deputy tells him. Cut to the Sheriff who is actually sandpapering the skin off his forearms. URG. He loads a gun. An apparition of himself intones ominously, “They know what you did.”

Meanwhile, Dean is still freaking the fuck out. At a retirement home, he jumps when he runs across a little old lady. Poor Dean.

They meet Mr. Garland, who asks for ID.

Dean freaks out about the scrutiny. “Those are real,” he tells Garland convincingly.

Sam asks Garland about the death of his brother. Garland tells them that everyone was scared of Luther, but he was the kindest man he ever knew. In the flashback Luther pulls a kitten out of a box and I melt into a giant puddle.

Sam pulls out the drawing of the woman they found. Garland identifies the woman as someone who worked at the mill. Her husband killed Luther and furthermore, this was common knowledge. Luther had a crush on her and when she killed herself Frank assumed that Luther had a hand in her death. He went into his room at the mill, saw pictures of her everywhere and assumed the worst. He tied a chain around Luther's neck and dragged him by a truck until he was dead.

Garland tells them that he complained to every cop he could find about Luther's murder but nobody would act on it. Frank was a pillar of the community. He says, in a moment that I did not remember at all, that he didn't hate Frank anymore. Frank's wife was missing and Frank was afraid. “That's fear,” Garland says. “It spreads and spreads.” (What an unexpected moment – where I remembered only fear and almost comical hijinks...there's this odd moment of peace and forgiveness - even of his brother’s murderer.)

The interview with Garland clarifies some things for Dean. The rash on his skin is road rash and the woodchips were swallowed by Luther as he was dragged. Dean's ready to burn some bones and be free again but Sam points out that Luther's body was ripped to shreds. They'll never recover all the remains.

Dean takes this very well.

Classic Dialogue Alert

Dean: What are we doing?!

Sam: We're hunting a ghost.

Dean: A ghost, exactly! Who does that?

Sam: Us.

Dean: Us? Right. And that Sam, that is exactly why our lives suck. I mean, come on, we hunt monsters! What the hell?! I mean, normal people, they see a monster, and they run. But not us, no, we search out things that want to kill us. Or eat us! You know who does that? Crazy people!

Dean heads off in a huff, flop sweating his ass off, when an adorable pup approaches. And we've joined up with the start of the episode. Sam finds Dean sweating and breathing hard in the motel room. Sam wonders how he got to the hotel. “Ran,” Dean says, wide eyed. Dean frets that he only has four hours left and Sam tells him it's about time he dies and heads back to hell. He's been a real pain in his ass. Sam's eyes glow yellow. Sam pushes Dean against the wall and tells him that the yellow eyes don’t mean he’s possessed...it's all him. He's going to turn evil and there's nothing Dean can do about it.

Snap to real Sam trying to help Dean calm down while Dean experiences a full out panic hallucination against the wall. It's getting bad...

It's time to bring in Bobby! He meets up with Sam and pulls out an encyclopedia of spirits written in Japanese. Bobby can both read and speak Japanese. Mmmmm yessss goooood. The fearful ghost, a Buru Buru, can be destroyed by fear. “So we have to scare a ghost to death?” Mmm hmm yes good luck with that.

Sam calls Dean and tells him to “hang in there” and they've got a plan. Cut to Bobby outside the mill who tells Sam that their plan is a TERRIBLE idea. Still, it's all they've got. Sam heads into the mill and tries to lure out Luther.

Back at the motel, Dean hears barking dogs. It's hellhounds at the door! No, it's the Sheriff. He breaks down the door, one arm bloody, and asks why Dean is looking into Luther's death. Dean tries to reason with him, even in his state of extreme fear, and the Sheriff decks him in response.

The Sheriff tells Dean that Frank was his friend and he let him go. He's not going to let Dean bring him down. Dean fights the Sheriff and sees his eyes turn demon black. Reality shifts madly between them. The Sheriff starts to seize from a heart attack. Dean yells at him to calm down but it's too late. (Yelling “calm down” is always effective with panic attacks.) The Sheriff dies.

Back at the mill, Sam realizes that walking around with a gun is scaring Luther's ghost. Sam sets down his gun and tries a different tack to luring out Luther. He starts tearing up the photos of the secretary. This works and Luther appears.

Dean continues to totally lose it, scratching his forearms and hearing barking hellhounds. He finds a bible and holds it in a firm embrace. Suddenly child-Lilith appears. She hugs him, sweetly,

Dean's going back to Hell. She tells him that she knows he remembers everything from Hell. Four months is like forty years, like “doggy years.” Oh, Dean Bean <3

Dean falls to the floor, his heart clenching. He tells her that she isn't real but she tells him it doesn't matter. “You're still gonna die. You're still gonna burn.” She smiles smugly.

“Why'd I get infected?” Dean asks.

“Silly goose. Listen to your heart. Ba BOOM BA BOOM.”

Luther, meanwhile, is beating up Sam. It's looking bad when Sam wraps chains around Luther's neck and yells at Bobby to “punch it.” Using the Impala, Bobby drags Luther's ghost in a horrible reenactment of his death, until Luther dissipates and moves on.

At the last minute, Dean gasps for air in the motel room and finds his arms are healed, skin unbroken.

Later, they tell Dean how they destroyed Luther's ghost with an iron chain. They gloss over the darkness of his second death and ask how Dean's doing. “I'm fine. You want to go hunting? I'll hunt. I'll kill anything.” So. Dean's doing GREAT and not at all long-term traumatized by his experiences in Hell.

For Science:

Bobby takes off and Sam asks Dean what he saw near the end. Dean thinks he sees yellow flash in Sam's eyes and tells him he saw “the usual stuff” and nothing he can't handle. Dean’s FINE, guys. EMOTIONS.

And while this is the end of the episode, it's not the END of the episode because. Guys. Here's where we get Jensen Ackles car dancing to Eye of the Tiger.
