Breaking News: NANS splits as splinter group reawakens NUNS
The umbrella body of students in the country, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has split, with the splinter group returning to the defunct National Union of Nigerian Students (NUNS).
NUNS, which was proscribed by the military government of General Olusegun Obasanjo in April 1978, was resuscitated after the election of its national executives at Kaduna Polytechnic at the weekend.
The executives of the revived NUNS are led by Comrade Salaudeen Lukman, a student of Geology and Mineral Science from Kwara State University, Malete, Ilorin.
Others are; Faruk Isah, Vice President National Affairs from Ladoke Akinola University, Ogbomosho, Abdulazeez Musa Alhassan, Vice President External Affairs, Abdulazeez Musa Alhassan from Bayero University Kano, Okonkwo Collins, Vice President Special Duties Uni Uli, Anambra State and Odugbemi Olohunfemi Ojotina, Public Relations Officer Kogi State University, among other.
Addressing journalists shortly after their emergency meeting, President of the Second Republic NUNS, Comrade Lukman said, “NUNS is a child of necessity to salvage a recurring problem of loss of ideology, political hijack, display of hooliganism/thuggery and mass domination of non-students in the existing apex students’ body, hence we shall not deviate from the core values and principle of operation in constructive alutarism with diplomacy”.

Bujumbura (Burundi) (AFP) - Gunmen from an armed splinter group of Burundi's main opposition party claimed they had killed 12 soldiers Thursday, although the army denied the reports, amid growing tensions in the central African nation. A dissident wing of the National Liberation Forces (FNL) said its fighters on Wednesday attacked two bases at Burniga, some 14 kilometres (nine miles) from the capital Bujumbura. "Four soldiers were killed at the first base and eight others at the second," rebel spokesman Eraste Dondogori told AFP. But army spokesman Gaspard Baratuza denied the claim, insisting "the attackers fired for a short time... but there was no damage." Source: AFP

Biography
Splinter Group formed in south London in 2010. Primarily a rock act the band borrow the D.I.Y. aesthetics of punk, whilst melding their guitar-driven sound with an intelligence and ironic sense of humor. Furthermore, the band rarely limits itself to simple, pounding riffs, often making detours into country, indie, pop & grunge with intellectual fury and childlike primitivism. For two singers with jarringly dissimilar voices, the gruff, gravelly Mark Woods and the soul melodies of Chris Mays SG pull off some great vocal interplay. Backed up by a rhythm section that you could leave strapped to a car doing 120mph in the heaviest of thunderstorms. They come out like a kid on a fairground round asking dad if they can “go again” The 5 piece band consist of Chris Mays (vocals, Guitar), Mark Woods (vocals, guitar), Chris Godley (bass), Jack Radish (organ), Paul Fontaine (drums) The demo album “Splinterville” is available at www.blogsplinter.blogspot.com A new EP will be released this winter…
