Octavio and Grizz were both living in the past, yearning for a time that was long past. Octavio didn’t just want to get to the surface, he wanted to “correct” history and defeat the inklings even long after everyone forgot about them. Grizz couldn’t accept a world where he was the only mammal, a world that was so radically different from what he knew. It’s a sad story for both of them, but it’s also their own decisions which made them into villains - trying to bring back something they couldn’t get back.

The Squid Sisters meanwhile seem to hold the past as fond memories and learning from what already happened, not to hold onto it and never move on. You can learn things about the past, and those memories will be fond things to remember, and carrying it within you, rather than trying to recapture or live in the past.

Smollusk of “Order” is the most simple here - it’s a villain of the present. The theme of Side Order was change, and especially the fear of change. The vision of Smollusk was to preserve the present for all time, but it was a world where free will doesn’t exist in exchange for that security and loses the uncertainty and change that makes life enjoyable.

Off the Hook emphasize enjoying the present moment, enjoying and using it to its fullest extent, and not about preserving it forever. The best time to do things is now, a philosophy about seizing the opportunities of the current moment without hesitation as well as appreciating what you have right now.

Then there’s Tartar… who’s the one where I’d say I’m speculating the most. But his plan’s end goal was about wiping out all current life on earth and starting again, creating a new super being using his primordial ooze. Through the interpretation of future, Tartar was only invested in the potential future and not the world that already existed. He didn’t care about current life, or even humanity that came before it, but instead about creating a future perfection through causing endless suffering.

But you could also make a case for Grizz being future as well - he’s not pleased at all with the present, both yearning for the past but also wanting to create something in the future - and like Tartar, creates present hardship for that future vision. He doesn’t care about the world as it is at all, and instead sees it as a resource to be exploited - from his employees being mere pawns, to exploiting the Salmonid’s resources, to even using the octarians as his own soldiers after fuzzy-ing them. He doesn’t care about anyone, all means to an end.

Deep Cut are about the anticipation and journey to the future, looking forward to what can come next and the endless possibilities of what could happen or surprises to come. It’s more about looking ahead, and not about completely disregarding everything else to get it like Tartar or Grizz did.

I’m not saying any team is better or worse, but with this theme being pretty broad it’s interesting to interpret the negatives to each option in the game’s universe and philosophy wise in comparison to the idols more positive and healthy view of their options.

It gets a wittle wonewy up hewe at the top of the spire, Eight visits sometimes, but I’d wike to get to know mowe fwiends!
