#JackedKirby - A Wizard and his Demon... 💥💥💥 Everyone who follows the page knows I am a HUGE fan of The Demon series... but the more I read it, the more I find more gems.... like this beauty opening splash page from #Issue5 of the series (January of 1973). 💥💥💥 We get this BEAUTIFUL shot of Etrigan, in strike pose ready to pounce, flanked by his master... The Wizard Merlin has never looked so cool!!! Look at the detail in his hooded cloak... it’s phenomenal! 💥💥💥 This series is loaded with amazing images and slash pages (so many splash pages!!!) but this has to be one of my faves... #JackedKirby - An Explosion at Castle Rakenstein!!! 💥💥💥 The Demon is one of our personal favorite Kirby series here at Jacked Kirby, and one of the definitive reasons we love it so much is the abundance of splash pages that Kirby incorporated into the run... especially the TWO PAGE beauties that litter the 18 issues of the series. Never one to waste one inch of space, Kirby was notorious for squeezing maximum potential out of every inch of layout, especially in these two page monstrosities! 💥💥💥 Take this double splash that comes right after the opening splash page of #Issue13 (published Oct of 1973). Three consecutive splash pages to open an issue... and the amount of action and mayhem Kirby managed to squeeze into this double page is off the charts. We see Dr Rakenstein and his evil assistant Igor reeling from the explosions erupting in his lab around them... debris and equipment flying through the air, skeletons and lab samples scattered through the flames! And Etrigan is right there, taking it all in and trying to apprehend his nemesis! (Pic 1). 💥💥💥 Pics 2/3 of this post are close ups of each half of the dual page spread... you gotta love the signature Kirby HANDS on Dr Rakenstein (pic 2) and the wonderful use of “Kirby Krackle” to accentuate the flames around Igor from the explosions (pic 3). The craziest part about this spread has to be that The Demon himself is flying dynamically through the air in a death-defying move and yet he is one of the most underwhelming figure in the whole spread!!! #JackedKirby - The Evil Ones!!! 💀💀💀 I am a big fan of the Kamandi run Jack completed at DC. Not only is it his longest stint for the company, but it is loaded with amazing visuals and great storytelling all from The King by himself! 💀💀💀 I was looking through #Issue24 of the series (December of 1974) and found this awesome interior splash page to post. I love when Kirby broke his series/comics into “chapters”. Not only did it compartmentalize the elements of the story, but if allowed Kirby more opportunities to complete SPLASH PAGES! 💀💀💀 This issue deals with a death cult, an evil Curse, a house of dangerous outcomes and a host of awesome looking characters! On this page Jack ties all of these elements together and presents them in beautiful harmony!!! I included the original inks (pic 1) and the recolored image from the recent omnibus release (pic 2) for various ways to digest the work. #JackedKirby - Merlin.... 💥💥💥 Merlin the Magician Of Arthurian lore is at the centerpiece for Jack’s gothic horror epic The Demon. Etrigan himself (the actual Demon) is a protector and weapon of the great wizards creation, used to battle evil forces long ago. But the Demon series is set in the 1970s... so how does Merlin exactly tie into the story thousands of years later? 💥💥💥 So throughout the first issue Jason Blood is tormented with dreams of Etrigan, and after unraveling a few clues he makes his way across the long to Castle Branek in Wolfenstag. Upon arrival Jason is attacked by minions of Morgaine Le Fey, Merlin’s arch enemy. She followed Jason as he was drawn to the castle... she hoped to find Merlin and end him once and for all! 💥💥💥 Jason makes his way to a sacred alter where he doesn’t exactly find Merlin... but he does find the famous incantation that he recites to become ETRIGAN! The alter has Druid style designs and is surrounded by monstrous gargoyles that spring to life but do not attack Jason... as if they are expecting him! 💥💥💥 Pic 1 of this post is a scrapped splash page today the alter featuring Merlin and the gargoyles. Jack must have eschewed this page when he decided to NOT have Merlin actually appear in #Issue1 (Sept of 1972). The unused splash seems to have been given/sold to “Marty” (See the inscribed remark on the bottom right) and was published in The Jack Kirby Collector #Issue13 back Dec of 1996. It is posited there that this page could have fit nicely between Page 21 (Pic 2) and 22 (Pic 4) in the actual issue, since we seen Jason approaching the alter and the gargoyles statues guarding it in those pics (closeups in Pics 3/5). #JackedKirby - The Fall of Camelot... Kirby Style! 🛡🛡🛡 Now this is the way you open up a comic book series... KIRBY STYLE!!! Here are the opening 3 pages of The Demon from August of 1972... a series that kind gave came out of nowhere and was the direct follow up to his cancelled 4th World titles. DC has told Kirby they wanted a “horror” title. Boy did he deliver... 🛡🛡🛡 The story opens with the wizard Merlin looking out a window at great destruction and chaos. He clutches the Eternity Book... and he looks very concerned (Pic 1). That’s because the forces of Morgan La Fey are marching on Camelot... and it may not last the night! 🛡🛡🛡 The following two page splash is as stunning a spread as Kirby ever created... a two page battlefield layout that is loaded with more action and detail than most comic creators could convey in a whole issue! (Pic 2 is the double splash, Pic 3 and 4 are close ups of each page). 🛡🛡🛡 I love how the helmets and armor of the soldiers look both ancient and futuristic at the same time... and the impossible angles that the action takes place at! Pure chaos... and the best part has to be the extreme Kirby Krackle present throughout the spread! #JackedKirby - The Dinosaurs of the Valley of the Flame!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Jack’s most famous dinosaur creation has to be the Big Red Machine, Devil Dinosaur.... but he did a plethora of single and double page splashes throughout the late 70s series featuring all types of dinosaurs in the Valley of the Flame!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Pic 1 and 2 of this post come from #Issue1 of the series (April of 1978) and Pic 3 comes from #Issue3 (June of 1978). All three images are FILLED from top to bottom, side to side with giant dinosaurs in various shapes and colors... it looks like the Museum of Natural History came to life on the printing presses of Marvel in 1978!!! 🔥🔥🔥 This post is to honor the request of one of our coolest followers, @lady.cult !!! She runs that page as well as @retro.cult and both are chock full of absolute nerdy awesomeness... plus she always shows us a lotta love and she said Devil was her favorite Kirby creation!!!
