Working on my next arcane art: reading while spinning
I know - audiobooks exist. I have always listened to audiobooks when doing fiber arts, but I like reading more than listening, and I was missing it
With tatting, it somehow works once the pattern is engraved in my head and I can count in the back of my mind while giving attention to the book. It does take some mental effort, though, so it’s not easy when I’ve been working twelve hours in the office.
The mental effort of spinning is nearly zero, which makes it much more compatible with reading. The main challenge is, in my view, that I am still somewhat a beginner so my drafting and twisting is even less consistent if I’m not looking. I think it gets better with experience, with building more muscle memory, and with good fiber prep.
Another challenge is good posture - but that’s a challenge with or without book.
I should mention that the reading + fiber crafting is working for me also because I read on a Kindle, so I can make the font bigger (at my fossil age and given that I read documents on a screen twelve hours a day it’s important not to stress my eyes too much in the evening!), and I can turn the page with just a quick tap. It would not work for me with a paper book.
