Hello everyone! Today, we are here with an interview. Jasper, our director of the Dark Witchcraft Program, answered some questions for you. 

How old are you? 

17!

How long have you been practicing witchcraft?

4 years. 

What are your specialized areas? 

I specialize in Death Work, Shadow Work, and Spirit Work but I dabble in all of the Basics.

What are dangers of your craft? How do you avoid them?

There are many dangers in my craft! With Shadow Work, there is emotional drain and negative energy can attach itself to me. With Spirit Work, there are malevolent spirits of all kinds and different outcomes if you don’t use proper safety precautions. To avoid dangers, I make sure to educate myself. I also make sure to only practice my craft when I’m at high energy and use protection spells like crazy.

What do you suggest baby witches who wants to gain experience in Death, Shadow or Spirit Work?

I suggest starting slow and not jumping into anything too quickly. You can never know too much on these topics before getting into the action of it. Make sure to know how to protect cleanse yourself and the area around you before you adventure into any of these fields.

What did witchcraft changed in your life?

Witchcraft changed the out view I’ve had on life as a whole. It has helped me grow as a person and truly discover myself and what I want to do with my life.

Do you have any daily/weekly habits about your craft?

Yes! I do daily prayers of worship to the deities that I worship (Hades, Persephone and Apollon) and I write in my Book of Shadows weekly.

Do you have a familiar?

I do not, currently.

Some questions we’ve been asked via email that we’d like to share the answers to in case anyone else is wondering similar things!

1. How much experience do the mentors have? What are the qualifications to become a mentor at the Institute? - Each of the mentors have varying experience and expertise in their area. It varies from 1 year to a lifetime of interest, research, and upbringing in specific fields. Sorry this is a hard question to answer because it varies from mentor to mentor. The qualifications to become a mentor at the moment are basically extensive knowledge on the subject, ability to teach and devote time to the institute, and create lessons to span the 10 weeks. However, we’re not currently accepting applications for this role. The mentors we currently have were vetted internally in a network of people who already worked together and were already aware of each other’s strengths and areas of expertise, if that makes sense.

2. In what format will the lessons take place? How often will we get homework, and in what format do we present those to you? What expectations do the mentors have towards their students and their progress? What happens if the students fail? - The lessons will be held on Google Classrooms, and will be presented as google docs, powerpoint slides, etc. It is a little different for each mentor but typically you will get a lesson once a week and an assignment to go with it that is completely optional. You may be asked to answer a discussion question in the discord, comment on the lesson on google classroom, write something in a google doc, etc. Typically whatever is easiest for you and the mentor! The main thing mentors expect is willingness to communicate and participate when able. That being said- if you’re absent for a period of time that’s fine just let us know! Students cannot specifically fail. If you participate and complete the lessons and assignments you will receive a certificate at the end of the program!

3. What does the Institute consider “excessive extreme language”? Also, could you specify what type of “personal information” we can’t reveal?  - Excessive extreme language would be considered cursing and violent language. The occasional curse word will not result in a strike, but if you are constantly saying ugly things you will get a warning. This will be on a case by case basis. Personal information would be like giving out your address in the server. These rules are both for safety reasons!

4. Why is the Sigils course in the Dark Witchcraft program and not in Basics? I was always under the impression that sigil-making wasn’t “dark” so to speak. - You’re absolutely right it isn’t necessarily dark, and is used in many types of practices. However, it is considered a type of chaos magick, which is covered in the Dark Program. These two classes will be closely related and when designing the programs it made the most sense to put them together.

5. Is it possible to drop out of the program if you need to? How do you go about doing that? - Message mentor Jasper! They will take care of unenrollment or program issues.

6. Is it recommended to first take the Witchcraft Basics program before you apply to any of the other programs? I don’t have any experience when it comes to witchcraft or magic, but I’ve long been intrigued about spirit-work and the like, so the Communications program appeals to me immensely. Could I possibly take both programs at the same time, or will it be too hard/much? - Which program you choose is completely up to you! My advice would be to choose which program is calling to you the most. You cannot currently take more than one program at a time, but you can always take another program the next semester! 

7. This might be a bit of an odd question but do the courses ever focus on polarity, specifically about female and male (sexual) energies? I’m a gay man so to me it can often be hard (and frustrating) for me to relate to that specific magical concept/theorem/paradigm. If yes is there any alternatives that the Institute also teach? - No odd questions, don’t worry! Let me try to break down your question and hopefully answer it to what you need. For one, we won’t be focusing on sexual energy in general, because we have minors in our student base. But as far as polarity goes, there is masculine and feminine energy in everyone, on a spectrum. We won’t focus on one vs the other or the God and Goddess, because we’re not specifically associated with any one religious practice (Wicca, for example). 

8. I don’t live in the USA. Will the time zone difference be a problem? - Nope! All the lessons will be available at any time and you’ll typically have a week to do the related assignment. There may be call discussions held over discord, but the mentors of those classes will do their best to involve everyone despite time zone differences.

So, this sounds super urgent and super dangerous for the spirits. If they're stuck inside and desperately want out, it likely means they are bound, which is incredibly painful and dangerous for spirits. I can help with that for free given the nature of the situation.

You might have accidentally bound them with your charms, bottles and spells. Unfortunately, a lot of "simple spells" that people do nowadays, are actually dangerous, because the people spreading those spells don't have all the information about them or where those spells come from or how they work in detail. As an example, check out my post on not closing spell jar lids.

There is a chance they aren't actually trapped, and are instead trying to attach to you or feed on your energy or what-have-you. Given how severe this sounds though, I can investigate it for free, just to make sure it's not a bound spirits situation. 17 is an awful lot, and I'm honestly a bit heartbroken just to know they might be bound...

If possible, please send another Ask answering the following questions. I respect if you wish not to, but it would really help me solve this situation.

How did you make the charms, bottles and spells in detail?

Are the charms, bottles and spells in your car specifically?

Do you have any helpful spirit sensing abilities (hearing, seeing, feeling, etc)?

Are you concerned that these spirits are harmful to you or your partner?

Who confirmed that there were 17 spirits, if I may ask, if anyone? If no one, how did you find out?

I recommend not unbinding them yourself because spirits in this situation, even when freed, are often volatile, even to the person freeing them. This is because it can be a very traumatic and painful experience, and they may not trust us not to bind them again. I have specific trainings in how to do this and protections up, so I'm safe to do it. This is part of why I do it for free though. So, for example, if you have closed spell jars, please do not open them just yet as the spirits may attack you once freed.
