I really like how they handled this comparison. Instead of outright comparing Snotlout to Grimbeard the Ghastly, they compare him to Speedfast, the boy who wasn’t horrible, but was still proud and angry and left unchecked.

The closer I come to the actual ending of the book series, the less excuses THW has for using the book's ending.
Because where I am at right now, (almost halfway through book 11) it seems to me that all of the suffering of both dragons as well as humans is all caused by one man, Grimbeard the Ghastly. It's with him that it all started. Before him, there were several generations, several centuries, in which man and dragon lived together harmoniously. And it was all because of Hiccup the First and his descendants.
If the team behind THW really wanted the movies to follow the books, why didn't they just go with that? Cressida gave movie!Hiccup a home in her book universe, why couldn't the movies have just continued that storyline? Book 11 was released for the first time back in 2013! Maybe a little late for the second movie, but certainly not for the third! (or for rtte or the comics, btw)
Like, yeah, Hiccup the First's kingdom eventually fell and it took one boy king rejecting the symbol of trust between man and dragon (the Dragonmark turned Slavemark) to do it. But that doesn't erase the fact that there were still centuries of... maybe not of total peace, but certainly equality.
How is the "mature" decision to make the one that never lets those centuries happen? 300 years of Red Death? Hiccup the First's Wilderwest lasted several centuries longer than even that!

Hiccup the First wasn't just the one who first bore the Dragonmark, a symbol of dragon and mankind's trust, of being one, mixed from his own and Wodensfang's blood, no less. But his kingdom lasted for SEVERAL GENERATIONS, until one arrogant boy, who would later change his name to Grimbeard the Ghastly, was the first to reject the Dragonmark and turn it into the Slavemark, stating that dragonkind (and all who wear the mark) are slaves to mankind so that he can take (Hiccup the First's) kingdom and turn it into an empire? Stating specifically he wants to take the lands Hiccup the First "cost them."
So you're telling me that man and dragonkind lived harmoniously as equals for centuries until Grimbeard destroyed it all in the name of greed and ambition a mere 100 years ago? One man, backed up by countless more who simply followed his lead, caused all of this? A bunch of adults following the lead of a boy.
An arrogant boy who clearly never should've been crowned king, certainly not at his age. Definitely not a parallel to our Hiccup the Third or anything like that.
The slavery of dragons, the slavery of man, the grief and anger of Furious, and lastly, the current approaching human or dragon extinction; all because of one man.
Also woah they really look alike.. Speedfast even has the same emotive skeleton tattoos as Snotlout
