I can't think of any anime outside of Chihayafuru and I guess Angelic Layer? If manga's okay there's Teppu and Gunjou (the one by Idumi Kirihara, not Ching Nakamura).
I've watched and not finished Chihayafuru! I did enjoy it, although the reason I ended up dropping it was because it was a little slow - that, and I could tell it was going to have some sort of romantic plot which I just wasn't there for.
And if I'm being petty - I want a sports anime, like a real, physical sports anime. Which is why I'm also not here for 'but what about Love Live??'. There's nothing wrong with LL - I actually enjoyed it a lot - but I want ladies being fierce and training together and blood sweat and tears, and Tragic Sports Injuries, and burning to push themselves beyond their physical limits. I live for that shit, and while Chihayafuru is a good anime, it's....not really what I'm looking for, you know?
Again with Angelic Layer - I watched it years ago, and it's a decent series, but not really what I'm looking for.
I haven't heard of the other series you've suggested, but I've noted to check them out, so I appreciate the heads-up.
