Speaker announcement: Derick Ebert: "#SpeakerSpotlight: Up next in our lineup for this months talk at Arena Players, Inc. theater is Derick Ebert. Derick said that when he was to take to a stage for the first time to perform spoken word, he "had cold feet and had to walk off." It's something he laughs about now, as he became the city's first youth poet laurete in April 2015 in a competition hosted by the Enoch Pratt Free Library and the nonprofit organization @dewmorebmore. The 20-year-old @citycollegian alumnus is currently a junior at University of Baltimore, is a teaching artist through DewMore, and recently released the book, Black Boy Archaeologist, full of original poetry. (Psst...you'll be able to get your hands on one at the talk!) First up, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute junior Katie Arevalo (creativemornings.com/people/karevalo). Katie has been working in advocacy and education since the 6th grade. As a former board member of the @YouthAsResources organization and a current youth organizer for the @BaltimoreAlgebraProject, the 17-year-old's hopes for change in Baltimore are to "see student empowerment and leadership in education.
