Semi-Silent Sketch Show:
One of my proudest shows was never happened because of negativity within a 3-person sketch/improv group- FIC.
We had spent 3 months writing and practicing for a sketch show that was almost entirely without dialogue. We had ran 3 or 4 up in Not Too Shabby and gotten great reviews. We had signed up for UCB’s Spank Show, which gave sketch shows a viewing at UCB, and if they did well- were asked to come back. Since you sign up 3 months in advance, they frown on you backing down with two weeks to go.
We had promotional videos, and postcards made. Then the fighting started. All I heard was, ‘I’ve only written 2 of these 8’, or doubts on if they were as funny as we thought. I fought so hard to keep this going, yet 1/3 of a group isn’t enough to do the show. Like bad actors, they didn’t believe the motto ‘The show must go on’ and cancelled.
I didn’t want to keep getting disappointed by them, or be labelled as someone who always back down from my word at the theatre, so I did what I had to, and dropped out of the group. Never did another show with Amy Vorpahl ever again, but I did really have a blast being on a team with her till then.
So that was FIC. On to the next main team- Man Up!
