Narrinite military divisions, not including mounted or foot archers
A beautiful coppered and gilt Spangenhelm, Montepagano, Italy, 6th century, housed at the Deutsches Historisches Museum.
Doing my part to de-romantise any Crusader visuals the 1st did NOT have enclosed helms with a face plate which were not even a thing til like the late 12th the wealth the metallurgy the craftsmanship just didn’t exist yet not even for royalty did it exist but ya got nasal helms and spangenhelms which could also leave some dang goofy tanlines
Thank you for your service! And yep! Here’s a pic of an 11th century “nasal helmet”:
[ID: From wikipedia, “11th century Moravian nasal helmet, Vienna. One of the few remaining examples of such helmets.”]
Notice how its a single sheet of metal. The other one mentioned, spangenhelms, were made from multiple braces of metal which is why they were replaced by nasal helms eventually. Here’s a really rusted one:
[ID: from wikipedia, “Spangenhelm (iron), Migration Period - Museum of the Cetinska Krajina Region - Sinj, Croatia“]
