Space-Borne Quantum Source to Secure Communication
Gold and futuristic looking, however no bigger than a bread box, this gadget has actually actually been executed its rates– sustaining large leaps in temperature levels from minus 40 to plus 60 degrees celsius, direct exposure to cold and heat in vacuum, and disconcerting rodeo flights on a triple-axis vibrating platform. Throughout this agonizing project, the gadget had to show its undeviating toughness and high efficiency. When this quantum source passed the last of a difficult battery of tension tests performed to the European Space Agency’s strict requirements, it was considered space- deserving. Clearly, this rugged little box would endure a rocket launch and hold up under extreme off-planet conditions.
For the very first time scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena prospered in establishing an extremely steady yet effective quantum source. It can create 300,000 knotted photon sets per 2nd when the light from a laser beam strikes a non-linear crystal. These twinned light particles allow delicate messages to be safely secured. Here is how it works: The 2 photons’ polarization stays knotted– that is, associated– no matter how far apart they might be. This permits 2 interacting celebrations to produce and share secrets and right away spot if a third-party efforts to obstruct their communication. If an unapproved celebration damage the message, the 2 photons disentangle to expose that a hacking effort is underway.
A robust, high-output source
But why does the quantum source have to remain in space? Entangled photons might likewise take a trip by means of fiber optic cable televisions such as telephone lines. But this would cut the variety brief and hamper the crucial procedure of photon entanglement. A far much better choice is to piggy-back the quantum source on a satellite and send it into low Earth orbit, where it can send the twinned light particles down to the world from an elevation of 400 kilometers with very little disruption.
“The quantum source’s stability and performance presented the greatest challenges because the loss rate is still high on the way through the Earth’s atmosphere. This is why it is so important to generate as many entangled twin photons as possible to maximize the number of photons that reach the communicating parties on Earth,” describes Fraunhofer IOF job supervisorDr Oliver deVries One crucial constantly needs a number of sets of photons. Expounding even more on this, de Vries includes, “We optimized the quantum source’s stability with a smart design, effective inorganic bonding processes, and robust materials that do not expand much in the event of temperature changes.”
FirstEuropean quantum satellite to been available in 4 years
Thetechnology is currently drawing in a great deal of attention, especially from banks and federal government firms that count on secure communication. However, the facilities required to share secrets has yet to be developed prior to quantum file encryption can be executed in 3 to 5 years’ time. The interacting celebrations would have to get the light particles with a gadget like a telescope. This gadget, in turn, would have to be incorporated into the IT structure.Dr de Vries currently has a strategy in mind. “I could imagine a business model where Fraunhofer equips the satellite with a quantum source and outside partners offer the reception infrastructure and sell the keys.” The research study group’s reveal objective is to send out the very first European quantum satellite into space in around 4 years.

Later in the year, Werenbach will launch new models, where each model will show a different dial made from a certain part of the soyuz rocket. Therefore, every wristwatch model will be one of a kind. We were able to have a look at those dials back in March at Baselworld 2017. Every single dial will have its unique design, colors and markings, such as scratches and other signs of wear.🚀 . . The Watch and Jewellery Show)
Another Amazing Kickstarter (Watches built from spaceborne rockets. by WERENBACH —Kickstarter) has been published on http://crowdmonsters.com/new-kickstarters/watches-built-from-spaceborne-rockets-by-werenbach-kickstarter/
A NEW KICKSTARTER IS LAUNCHED:
Earth Collection – The first collection made of original rocket material that is accessible for everyone.
With this collection we bring a real piece of space travel history to your wrist. At affordable prices thanks to a new production concept.
The material comes from Soyuz MS-02, which was launched on 19 October 2016 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. On board were astronauts Shane Kimbrough (USA), Andrei Borissenko (RU) and Sergei Ryschikow (RU). We used the material from the first rocket stage (booster & fairing). After the rocket reached an altitude of almost 50km, the booster was jettisoned, then the fairing at an altitude of 85km. They fell back to Earth in a military restricted area on the steppes of Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan 19th October 2019, Soyuz MS-02 some minutes after launch. Marco & Patrick (very happy)
Since we are using original materials, you can tell by the colour which part of the rocket the material comes from. Thanks to this approach, each watch has a distinct and authentic look. The different signs of wear in the material, such as scratches, make each model in the collection unique. The exception is Model 1. In this model, the dial is black-anodised. Here, too, you can see original scratch marks.
Material used
Made from the inner surface of the booster. Black-anodised. Fine scratches.
This dial was cut from the inner surface of the rocket booster. The surface has been left in its original condition.
Made from the outer surface of the booster. Original. Fine scratches.
Made from the outer surface of the booster. Original. Fine scratches.
(Currently availability 300 pieces due to limited usable material)
Made from the fairing. Original. Color shades. This material reached an altitude of approx. 85 km
Model 5: Current availability 100 due to limited usable material.
This material will always be short: the rocket engine is the heaviest part of the rocket, this is why the booster strikes ground with the orange material.
We might rise the quantity in March. But before we can rise the amount we must first check the material. Then we can determine how many additional watches can be produced. Sign up to our newsletter on our website www.werenbach.com to get information first.
Made from the exterior cladding of the rocket engine. Original. Fine scratches.

The Launch Sequencer is an adjustable ring on the dial incorporated in the Models 2, 4 & 5: by using the second crown, the rocket’s “time of lift-off” can be set. The minute hand then shows what phase the rocket is in and its altitude. Did you know that the Soyuz rocket reaches orbit in less than nine minutes?

Dials are normally made of brass and have a thickness of 0.4mm. Our material is of aluminium, furthermore the walls of the rocket are 5mm thick and are curved. The removal and workmanship of the material requires special machines and knowledge of the material. The most difficult thing is attaching the connecting elements to the movement. We know of only one single specialist who can do that.

We may be Swiss, but we do not want price to get in the way of things. The Earth Collection Edition is meant to be affordable, which is why we have looked not only in Switzerland but worldwide for components that meet our quality standards.
In Japan we found a movement that is comparable to a Swiss quality movement, both technically and optically. See for yourself: we purposely left the back of the watch transparent.
And by the way, the movement is automatic – it winds itself! If you wear the watch regularly, you will never have to wind it. It does not have to be recharged like a Smartwatch, nor does the battery ever need to be replaced.
Movement specifications: Cal. 15 made by Seiko* (the movement on the picture below is the Miyota 9015. This movement has been exchanged by NE15 from Seiko which looks similar), Power reserve: > 50h, Frequency: 21,600 A/h, Stones: 24.
Watch Specifications: Dimensions: diameter 40mm, height 13mm, Weight: 87gr., Water resistance: 50 meters / 5ATM, Function: date, hour, minute, second, Glass: scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, Scale: Launch Sequencer in Models 2, 4 & 5, Numbering: each watch has a serial number Strap: fabric
The watches of each model are numbered consecutively starting with number one. If you’d like to have one of the first then, you can order them in a separate box. The numbers will be assigned according to the placement of orders. First come, first served.
A piece of the Soyuz MS-02 is also available to put on a key ring. Unique and exclusively on Kickstarter.
This is a bit unusual. So was the begin of our project. Because it was such a great adventure and because we hat to suffer so much. Patrick had to write a novel. Unfortunately it is only in German. This novel is the first novel ever that has been written about a watch. You will get it stamped and signed by Patrick. And of course also a piece or space rocket which you can put on your key ring.
The adventure novel (only in German) and a piece of space rocket.
Due to the US minimis regulations (value up to 800 USD) customers from the United States do not have to pay any taxes on the watches offered on Kickstarter.
Some countries charge an import duty for purchasing an item from overseas; we wish we had the power to eliminate that tax or charge, but unfortunately, we don’t :(. That’s why we offer free shipping to international customers, to offset the cost of duties that they may be charged. International fans should be aware that prices billed by Werenbach ltd. for goods shipped outside Switzerland do not include any taxes, duties, VAT or other charges due to the recipient’s local or national government authority. All fees, duties, and taxes, including VAT, are the sole responsibility of the recipient and must be paid upon arrival in the destination country. Usually, these fees are demanded before delivery and are collected by the shipping courier or local customs authority. For more details, please contact your local customs office. You may also use a dutycalculator.com to calculate what your local government may charge you. In the event that you refuse the delivery, you would be responsible for any duties and shipping costs that are incurred to return the product to Werenbach Ltd. Thank you for your understanding!
We stand firmly behind our products and are committed to fantastic service. Each Werenbach watch comes with a limited warranty on flaws in workmanship and materials for a period of two (2) years after original purchase.
The Kickstarter prices are a one-time offer and are only possible because this is a pre-sale campaign. You are getting the watches practically at factory price. We, on the other hand, are able to finance production thanks to your pre-payment and make our new watch collection known on the international crowdfunding platform. A true win-win situation, don’t you think?
If you have studied our website, you will have noticed the price difference to the Atelier Collection. The main reason for this difference lies in the watch case. The cases in the Atelier Collection are made from the rocket engine. The metallurgic processes and subsequent precision machining are extremely complex and time-intensive. Moreover, these watches are made by hand in Zurich in very limited numbers and with top-quality components.
The Earth Collection is effectively a reinvention of the rocket watch. The aim here was to create a collection that everyone could afford: the dials are made of rocket material, we have teamed up with two renowned watchmakers and we have made price and quality top priority when choosing the components.
The combination of the Kickstarter offer and the new concept have led to a price that is almost revolutionary. Never has there been a watch made of such unique material at such a comparable price.
