Before CGI became a practical resource for film makers, actual miniature models were photographed using stop motion camera rigs with very wide optics, it was slow and expensive, and I still think it looks better than CGI. CGI still looks like a dopey video game, yes I know I'm a digital vs analog didact.....I think most CGI is annoying (Avatar?), when it's good, you don't notice it, we are getting closer.
