" find inspiration, some kind of purpose. to take a second to face the shit that makes me me.... "
independent siren & musician as noted by luca
this family was more fun when we had fewer medical degrees ( c )
nocturne.
she was bright. he couldn’t see her aura, no -- he couldn’t see if she was bright in what, to him, was the literal fashion, but she was bright. beaming. smiling. louis could hardly remember the last time he saw her smile... he wracked his brain, he came up empty.
walking to his car from nicholas’s property, he opened the backdoor for her, let her slide in, closed the door, moved around the car, got in the driver’s seat, buckled, closed the door, looked in the rearview mirror --
and he reactivated.
she was purple.
purple seemed to glisten against her skin.
strings swelled, the single pianist now accompanied as he played his nocturne for the audience. “ you’re... ” he trailed off, meeting khevna’s confused gaze with a soft smile, soft eyes.
“ i suppose we should get home. you’ve got a big day ahead of you, right ? -- principal for the day ! ”
“ yeah ! but i beat melanie lipschitz by just two candy bars. ”
“ well, you know you have mrs. de leon to thank for that bulk order. ” he offered a light chuckle, khevna chiming in.
pulling away from the property, he continued to check the mirror for that purple that licked her skin. it was beautiful. and it was the color of her mother. for all she had resented her, perhaps she would understand one day now. for all she had to go through, perhaps she would come to realize there was no other way. purple, the setting of a bittersweet symphony. purple, the pianist playing minor chords. but in a hopeful pattern.
they were no longer distanced from each other. it had all been... a glitch, perhaps. a moment of fault. he could see her as she was. finding the tamagotchi she had one attended to in the seat beside her, commenting on how she needed to make a new one, second guessing herself when she recalled how kelly mathis spent all day trying to make sure her tamagotchi didn’t die because they were just that needy...
and she was talking. she was acting the way he had always hoped his child would act: happy. she had more than just simple one-syllable words to say. she had sentences, run-ons, and he had never felt warmer. butterflies filled his chest, threatening to choke him. and she didn’t even realize it. she simply kept talking about her tamagotchi, about being principal for a day, about how much fun it was to play with ava -- marginally younger.
pulling onto their street, a thought entered his mind: an aura so bright didn’t deserve to live in a grey house. he would have to begin investing in more decor, light both of their lives up again.
swinging into the driveway, he called to the backseat, “ what would you say about a small room makeover ? you could choose your decorations and everything. ”
and he looked in the rearview window.
and she shrugged her shoulders, now colorless.
and the strings stopped swelling.
the nocturne came to a close.
and he could only hope he had put two-and-two together...
that they had simply strayed too far from nicholas...
the great gig in the sky
“It is the way it is, you know? Everything must come to an end. The drip finally stops.”
