Interesting observation.
NPCs in soulsbornering almost always introduce themselves from the very beginning and with that - we know their name. But they always address the main character by title from prophecy or a nominal noun (Chosen Undead/Bearer of a Curse/Ashen One/Good Hunter/Tarnished⦠+ mc from demon souls but I donāt know their title).
And itās reasonable. Because despite selecting name at the start of the game *we* never introduce ourselves. And NPCs donāt ask our name either. Maybe it is implied that characters now who we are but technically they shouldnāt know us by our *name*- we literally tell no one about it.
If you think about it from perspective of actual social interaction, then it kinda looks funny. Itās basically random injured warrior, covered in blood, just silently runs up to you and you go like āoh. hi. hereās my name and storyā and this stranger just stares at you and listens, occasionally gives commentary and leaves. And later returns (in outfit of important historical figure of your land) to listen to you again.
It can be seen even dramatic: you establish notable bonds with some NPCs, fight to the death side-by-side or against each other. And till their last moment they donāt even know who you are. Yes, more global āwho you areā question - because we donāt even share our story. They know our goal but only vaguely. And sadly they canāt even find out if you chose to āstray from the pathā or they assume wrong in a first place (in some cases). You are just nameless champion from legends and prophecies.
And with that - good opportunity to make headcanons about how our characters present themselves. Do they indeed hide their name? Do they properly address it? Fake it? Make up the new one? Do they even remember their name prior game events? Because in most cases (if not all) we are resurrected, amnesia can take place. Also - how others address us to one another?
And even deeper questions can arise. What value our characters hold in history, memory, legacy and with that - in names? Do they want to be remembered and why? If yes, how? If the character chooses to end current order/age and replace it with a setting where everything is changed (by choosing dark age/frenzied flame), is there an internal conflict if history and legacy matters to them? I can go on indefinitely.
Gwyndolin Starts Shedding and Oscar tries to Peel the Snake Skin as Slow and Gently as he Possibly could...
(Because Oscar didn't want Gwyndolin/Snakes to Bleed if he Pulls Too Hard and get Bitten too...)
ROGIER AHHH!!!!
