Character: Yoji
He lives one layer of reality below Earth’s, in what his people call The Forest.
He’s a member of the six-person tribe called the Speakers. They’re a shamanic tribe responsible for communication with all living plants. As such, they have been respected and even exalted by other tribes until now.
Yoji can spiritually connect with plants, but it’s much more difficult for him than for the rest of his family. He cannot walk the Aether at all.
He is analytical. Because of what’s happening, he spends a lot of the book being really serious, always noticing, collecting, and analyzing details that can help him get his family back.
Actually, he’s the rebel of his family; the explorer; the one who will disappear at the first opportunity and spend the rest of the day hunting the canopy for fresh discoveries.
He’s one-track-minded. Give him a task and he will see and hear nothing else until it’s done.
He can’t tell right from left at all.

First Lines: Soulfall
Yoji was used to sleeping in the moss-covered arms of the Old Trees. He was used to their nutty scent, the gentle creaks of the boughs in the warm, damp air. He was used to the feeling of soft white moss against his skin, and the tendrils of green vine and fern that clung to the great trunks and glowed gently in the darkness.
He was not used to being hunted, and so his sleep was deep enough that he remained oblivious until the phantom was bearing down on him.
