No one disarms Anisha Mir. Especially not high and mighty Starfleet officers who think they're too good to bother with the likes of her, and just send holograms.

3. (In the Mirror) I Don’t Recognize Her - SAM & Sylvia Tilly (and the cadets), teen, Sam's friends are trying to tell her they love her exactly the way she is, but she might need an outside opinion.

Any patterns in my first lines were a bit messed up because of my neurodivergent cadets series, where each one starts with a letter. But otherwise I have a tendency to start with a wry bit of dialogue or observation from a character. Good balance of gen and a couple of rarepairs, one of which I will obsessively write till I fall over - so I have the role I expected in this fandom.

Varric hummed Bianca’s Song to himself as he puttered around his room, collecting a small length of cord, several bolts, four jars of varying size and a few tools, which to the untrained eye was just a bunch of junk, but to those closest to him, it was Bianca’s maintenance day.

4. Demon of the Night Winds (Mass Effect, James Vega/Morinth, rated E)

James smiled as he entered Afterlife's VIP area, the thumping of the bass pulsing through his body and the dancing asari up on the platforms filling his vision.

Ava blinked awake, a little disoriented to be in their room–only vaguely remembering James carrying her to bed in the middle of the night after they'd all fallen asleep on the sofa watching Blasto–and smiled sleepily at the warmth surrounding her.

Joker glanced at the console in front of him, 2137 glaring up at him from the screen—he’d been here for an hour already and he wasn’t a patient man, restlessness starting to kick in as he sat there.

Ryder sighed as she picked off the last Kett attacker that had ambushed them and slumped against the wall behind her, biotic glow fading from around her and her eyes returning to their normal color.

Felassan found himself watching Elessar across the war table; the Inquisitor really was quite remarkable, and if he hadn’t known Solas like he did, he would have said that if anyone could find the dread wolf it would be this man in front of him.

Illario glanced up as footsteps sounded beyond the door, his body on high alert from having been sitting here for Maker knew how long and restlessness had started to set in.

I just started reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, and the first line of the Prologue is “The small boys came early to the hanging” and the first line of chapter 1 is “In a broad valley, at the foot of a sloping hillside, beside a clear bubbling stream, Tom was building a house.”

They’d gone to their beds, Mum and Da and Caitlin, all of them exhausted and showing it in an exaggeration of their manners, Caitlin’s tread heavier and Mum’s shoulders back like she would be the prow of a ship facing the waves, Da loose and pantherish in a way Taggie didn’t want to acknowledge she recognized would be attractive to women. (I had a thought for no one’s but your ears, Rivals)
