the end of madoka is so. like i thought we were all clear that the reason the magical girl system is bad is not because witches exist but because we were conscripting 12 year old girls into a forever war as a kind of pan-dimensional omelas situation
Scrimp the cat beard!
episode 8 of madoka. i would describe it as like. objectively interesting television but more in the sense that i am invested in the mystery and the melodrama as opposed to rgu where even the experience of watching it feels like studying it
maybe it’s unfair to keep comparing them because certainly there’s nothing that ties them together fundamentally aside from them both being anime with i guess some lesbiannical overtones. but i feel like online i see people comparing them a lot which. i understand the urge because they definitely both feel very invested in exploring systems of power, what it means to have power, what it means to exercise power over others, how do these systems become abusive. and they both also seem. invested in challenging the audience’s immediate aesthetic associations by forcing a contrast between idealized beauty and harsh reality. and of course kyubey and akio are like. i guess i would say somewhat analogous characters.
all that being said, madoka is very very obsessed with explaining the rules of this world, and giving every kind of behavior a point value in a way that is very common of anime in general and the absence of which made rgu and it’s somewhat hallucinatory approach to logic so compelling.
also for a show called “madoka magica”, the character of madoka is pretty secondary to the actual drama of the show lol
god. okay. homura being like “let’s become evil let’s burn it all down” and madoka being like. no you have to save me please. the contrast of madoka acting as himura’s conscience but even then that it’s a fundamentally selfish ask is really good.
that being said i did laugh when homura whipped out the glock. like i’m sorryyyyy i know the contrast is supposed to be meaningful and represent her practicality or whatever but it’s just soooooooo funyyyyyy

god homura and madoka it’s like. of course the ‘i have crossed timelines to save you/i can do nothing but dedicate my life to saving a version of you who will never know me/i do not care who i have to hurt or kill to protect you and that includes myself’ stuff is compelling but like. they’re 12 and drawn like 5 year olds. the pickings are not so slim that i must fixate on the 12 year olds.
my kittybeard!
And so she upped and went to heaven on me, a year ago. Not one day goes by that I don’t miss her wit, her love, her wisdom... My life is definitely not the same and the pain hasn’t gotten any easier to swallow, I’m just more used to the absence. I miss my Shakti like the day she left, can’t wait to meet her again some day… #shaktithecat #seeyouinheaven #imissyou #soulcat #catangel #family #lossofalovedone https://www.instagram.com/p/CWZ0pSnrK7A/?utm_medium=tumblr
