I guess it was a Thursday morning when I found out. She was wrapped around him like his girlfriend. LIKE his girlfriend. That was supposed to be me. But I wasn’t allowed to do that. I knew he wasn’t a very touchy person, but apparently that was just towards me.
“Sorry babe. I should go back home to Ade.”
“Whyyyy. You know you love me more than her.” She pulled on his tie inching closer to him.
“I don’t know why, I just can’t leave her.”
Damn right he can’t, I remembered. I had to leave first and I will.
Tonight’s the night. Everything that was mine was packed up. Everything that was ours was left in a box near the door. Everything that was his was still in the exact place that he left it.
Just as I walked to the door, He let himself in.
Then he noticed my suitcase at my hand.
“Where are you going babe?”
Then he noticed the box near the door.
‘Dinner’s in the microwave and you’re out of eggs.’
Moving past him, I caught a whiff of her perfume again. This is what reassured me to keep moving rather than to let me fall back into his arms.
“Babe. Where are you going?”
He grabbed my suitcase and held it next to him. I looked up at his face to see that the very eyes that I loved one last time. His eyebrows were held over with a worried look and everything about him screamed confusion. But I pulled out a note out of my jacket and held it out for him. Reluctantly taking it, he let go of my suitcase and started reading it.
I took my luggage and left.
Finally, I was finally free. I was finally free, but why did it feel like there was still a piece of myself in that house.
