Here to admit that I started watching Hannibal in 2019 and I still haven't finished it. I love it so much, it's a favorite show of mine, but I'm not even halfway through season 3. Was having an online discussion about women in the media...
...and the typical arguments were being tossed around. Men overwhelmingly were arguing that women need to stop dressing provocatively and "taking advantage" of their sexuality/powers/etc. Women were overall arguing that the media needs to stop objectifying women in general. Etc. etc. But what no one managed to bring up was how men could change. I suggested that men could refuse to treat women differently for their appearance/sexuality and not take advantage of women who dress or act provocatively. I'm not a social justice blogger, I'm not a 'feminazi,' I'm just sick of hearing these same arguments about feminism. We oversimplify the problem by simply pointing at people to blame. Men and women alike want to be seen as attractive and appealing. With each gender the qualifications are different. Women who dress provocatively may be insecure, may want to be seen as sexy - and some just like dressing that way. Men don't have uncontrollable sexual appetites, either. The media is not completely corrupt - it tailors to our interests.
I didn't get any responses. I didn't expect to, even though I was speaking to a large group of politically-informed people. I don't mind, because I know we're only beginning to accept the idea that men aren't irrelevant in the fight for equal treatment of women in our society, under the law, and in the workplace. That women and people in general should be able to dress how we want. That the corrupt/evil/sleazy media is just a reflection of us. I just hope I'm not alone.
