‘I’M COOL, HONEST!’
In .hack//ZERO, Sora tells Carl that he named his character after Sora Kawai, a famous poet. He later explains that he changed the kanji to look cooler.
Now, with way too much time on my hands and the power of the internet (a kanji dictionary), I finally discovered what has puzzled me since the early 2000s. What kanji change? What does that mean?
曾良 (original)
楚良 (.hack//SIGN Sora)
As you can see, the second character, the ‘ra’ in ‘Sora’ (meaning ‘ good, pleasing, skilled’) remains unchanged.
The character Sora tweaked ‘曾’ (meaning ‘once, before, formerly, ever, never, ex-’) was changed to ‘楚’ (meaning ‘whip or cane‘).
This little shit named himself after a great Japanese poet, but didn’t want anybody knowing about it because that’s lame. So he just tweaked a character to invoke a weapon and danger and strike terror into the hearts of unsuspecting people on the internet.
‘FEAR ME’, cries the 10-year-old with the edgy name.
I love this idiot lol. I’m honestly amazed it took 24 episodes for somebody to realise he was a kid roleplaying as a teenager - though, to be fair, there’s not much difference in attitude between the two. Not bashing Crim - he’s awesome.
