i went to a screening where they had a directors Q&A with sophy romvari after and she said a few really cool things
it was based on the story of romvari's actual brother but they street-casted the kid who played Jeremy. Edik Beddoes had never acted before and she just met with him a few times a week in the park to work on his character. Originally Jeremy was supposed to be mouthier/more extroverted but she liked Beddoes' energy so much she shaped the character after him
Amy Zimmer plays the fictionalised version of Romvari and she comes from a comedy background. Romvari said that working with comedians was awesome because they're a great hang
The letter that Amy Zimmer/Sasha reads to her parents was an amalgam of two letters: one written by Romavari and one written by Zimmer. Before shooting they compared what they'd each written and it was so similar they went with a combination
The social worker that Sasha facetimes was Romvari's family's actual social worker, who agreed to be in the movie and to use the fictional names. So when she talks about Sasha's parents, that was basically her talking about Romavari's actual parents
Romvari also said that it was her first time working with kids and that it was funny to watch them going from their ipads in the green room to playing these late 90s children. Most of the kids scenes were semi-improvised and one of the boys accidentally said "Dad showed me a video" but then caught himself and tried to correct it by saying "Dad showed me...a really old video"
