Robert’s lips were inches from his, as they sat, in the corner of the pub. It was well past any normal persons bedtime, the clock ticking over to four am, the pub long since emptied.

It was officially New Years Day. Aaron had never really bought into the whole new year, new me thing, had never really been much of a fan of new year’s in general, the whole thing feeling a lot like complete and utter nonsense, if you’d asked him - people didn’t change who they were simply because the first of January rolled around, and brought a new year with it.

But something felt symbolic about it, this year, Robert’s hand tangled in his own, the older man pressed to Aaron’s side, the two of hem as close as physically possible. He’d never gotten to be this close to Robert, not really - not as anything other than mates.

A new year, a new them.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Robert murmured, pressing a thumb to Aaron’s creased forehead, a worried look on his face.

“It’s just that… I’ve wanted this for so long I - I don’t know what to do now,” Aaron admitted, grip tightening on Robert’s hand. “I guess I didn’t think about what would come after your epic confession.”

Robert grinned. “It was a bit epic, wasn’t it?” he said, looking entirely proud of himself as he reminisced over the moment he’d decided he was going to climb onto a table in the pub, and declare his undying love for Aaron, on New Year’s Eve, of all days.

Aaron could have killed him, if he hadn’t been so shocked by Robert’s confession.

He’d been in love with Robert for so long now, he’d accepted nothing would ever happen - it had never felt like it would, Robert going through boyfriend, after girlfriend, after girlfriend, after boyfriend, as he’d had something to prove.

He probably did, knowing Robert - but Aaron had watched on for years, as Robert fell in and out of love, always the best friend on the sidelines.

Until now.

“It was embarrassing,” Aaron rolled his eyes, a flush rising in his cheeks as he remembered the way all eyes had been on them, as Robert had confessed all, his mum practically screaming from behind the bar as Robert had waxed poetic about how much he loved Aaron, how much he wanted to be with him.

“It was epic,” Robert shook his head. “And what do you mean, you don’t know what to do now?”

Aaron looked down at the floor, suddenly very interested in his shoelaces, the smart black sneakers Robert had bought him as part of his Christmas present adorning his feet. “I don’t know what to do now now I have ya,” he mumbled, cheeks red hot now.

“We can stay here,” Robert said, a finger under Aaron’s chin as he forced him to look up, bringing them back to face level. “And we can kiss some more, and we can talk - and stay up all night. Or….”

“Or?”

“We could go upstairs,” Robert said, voice gravelly and thick with want as he spoke, eyes darkening. “And you could let me show you just how much I love you, Aaron Dingle.“

That was never going to get old, Aaron decided as he let the words sink in, let them wash over him, let Robert’s love sink in to every inch of his skin, into his every pore. It felt like the kind of love that was going to change his life.

“What do you say?” Robert shifted a little closer now, his breath hot against Aaron’s cheek. “Are we going to start the new year as we mean to go on?” he asked, pressing a kiss to Aaron’s lips, long and slow, and filled with the promise of so much more.

He got it the minute Aaron gave him his ring back to keep them safe and close.

I rewatched the scene and there doesn’t actually seem to be any money or credit cards in there, so I think you’re both right!

the girl is literally ruthless. adam will die/go off to jail/smth dramatic will happen to him and she’ll be like “oh well already lost one sibling what’s one more why bother coming back FOR AT LEAST ONE DAY TO SEE MY POOR MOTHER SUFFERING CONSTANTLY”

(cont) obviously, because it’s them, something goes wrong, but in the end he doesn’t need a huge gesture, just the two of them in their home and aaron just goes for it and gets down on one knee and proposes. and if he steals robert’s ring to do it, which causes robert to have a meltdown because he thinks he’s lost it then that’d be fine too. (like what happened with nathan/haley on one tree hill!) sorry, for the rambles, i just got hit with the feels from your post, okay?

aaron would totally be like “i’m going to have to ask this prick to marry me aren’t i?” and start getting all riled up because he can’t do romance the way robert does

which is why he ends up nearly giving robert an actual HEART ATTACK by just straight up stealing his ring and not knowing wtf else he’s supposed to do

and he’ll ask robert to meet him somewhere and robert won’t show up and aaron will be like WTF IS WRONG WITH ME? HE DOESNT WANT ME. and he marches home, finds robert digging up flowers in the garden because HIS RING MUST BE SOMEWHERE and aaron is just overwhelmed with this love for him, he pulls out his ring, places it in rob’s palm and tells him to close his eyes. when he says open robert sees aaron down on one knee and he’s all like “you’re the only idiot i would risk knee ache for” and rob’s all like “i thought i was the ancient one” and aaron is all nervous and he just rambles about wanting to be with robert until they’re eighty odd and robert keeps saying yes and bends down and kisses him hard (i’m thinking like the ‘you’re the best’ aaron bday kiss?) and it’s so soft and the stars are out and at some point liv has crept in and she’s sniffling by her bedroom window and blaming her nonexistent hay fever.
